25th Anniversary Trip

My husband and I are planning our 25th anniversary. We are looking at San Antonio. We would like to stay on the Riverwalk. Any suggestions on the best, clean, (not the most expensive) hotels would be appreciated. Thanks.

25th Anniversary Trip

the ';best'; and more expensive hotels are La Mansion, Watermark, Hotel Valencia %26amp; Westin. for a less expensive option, i%26#39;ve only heard good things about the Drury Inn on the Riverwalk. Having stayed at many other Drury%26#39;s, I am a fan of the hotel chain as you get a spacious, clean room for a decent price. The Hyatt and Marriott are also great, but they%26#39;ll probably run you more...but worth a check.

Spring Break - 2007

We are planning a visit during Spring Break - March 16th - 23. We have reservations at The Dunes. What kind weather can we expect? Will there be tons of kids in the PA area? My hubby wants to fish - any suggestions? Any info would be appreciated!

Spring Break - 2007

oh yeeahhhh.. there will be TONS of kids that week. It is a huge crowd there that week! You wont be able to drive on the beach by afternoon it will be so crowded...but being at the Dunes, you can walk right to the beach! Will be lots of cops though to keep them in line. Be sure to book dinner reservations if going out.

If you have a nice balcony though, it is fun to watch from ';above';! which is what we generally do.

your husband can fish off the pier very closeby (he can walk there) and the jetties are not too far either. He can always book a boat to go out in the water, there are many. Check out Woody%26#39;s for help booking.

Weather is generally still cool - sometimes we have been lucky to have a 75 degree day, but usually low 70s. Cool and foggy in mornings. Unless the pool is heated you wont want to get in. The ocean will be cool too, but you can wade a bit.

You might want to ride the trolley to places too, parking will be terrible everywhere that week...... still a very fun time to go, just be patient!

Spring Break - 2007

Thank you so much for the helpful information! We are looking forward to our trip.

  • Where to go Memorial weekend with girls ages 9 & 6?

I am looking to go somewhere warm for 3-4 days. I live in Southern Calif and want to go to a nice Resort somewhere in the Western United States. But it has to be a warm weather area where we can bask in the sun while the kids play in a pool. My kids like waterslides and lazy rivers.

We recently went to Mandaly Bay in Vegas, the Fairmont Princess in Scottsdale and the Grand Wailea in Maui just to give an idea of what we are looking for. I dont want to travel very far for such a short trip (3 nights). I guess I would be willing to go as far as Texas (my kids don%26#39;t do well on planes on long trips).

Any suggestions? My preference is a large resort with lots of pools etc...but a beachside resort is an option too as long as its warm/hot.

Where to go Memorial weekend with girls ages 9 %26amp; 6?

    Howdy! You sure plan ahead!!

Two of our family%26#39;s favorites (boy age 11, girl age 10) are the Hyatt Hill Country in San Antonio and the Hyatt Lost Pines in Bastrop.

Both resorts are comparable, with the Lost Pines Resort being newer and I think a little pricier. It also has horseback riding in case your girls love horses like my girl does. The Hyatt Hill Country doesn%26#39;t have a waterslide (best I recall), but both resorts really cater to kids with tons of activities all day long. The weather over Memorial Day will be warm enough to swim in both Ausin and San Antonio.

Besides the resort, San Antonio has the Riverwalk, and Austin has the bat colony (really spectacular - a must see), so there are things to do once the kids have had enough sun.

Both San Antonio and Austin (for Bastrop) are easily accessible from various points in southern California via Southwest Airlines. One thing about Southwest that might benefit you is that lots of their flights are quick hops with plane changes.

La Cantera resort in San Antonio is also very, very nice, but I don%26#39;t think kids like it as much (mine don%26#39;t).

    Have a great trip!

  • Might be moving to San Antonio this year... can anyone help?

I%26#39;m hoping I can get some feedback from people who live locally to San Antonio. My husband might be getting a transfer from Chicago to San Antonio through his job, and I%26#39;m looking for suggestions on which areas near the city would be really nice for both schools, new construction homes and proximity to the city. Most importantly are highly rated school districts, if that helps.

Any help or opinons are sincerely appreciated. I would say a drive within 1/2 hour from the city itself would be really helpful as well.

    Thanks for your input !!!

Might be moving to San Antonio this year... can anyone help?

I%26#39;m a big fan of Boerne, Texas. (pronounced ';Burn-ee';!): http://www.boerne.org/

Boerne is 20 miles north of San Antonio up I-10. there are many other places to look, but this is a great place to start in my opinion.

it also depends on where your husband will be working.....if you know that information or any other preferences, then please let us know.

Might be moving to San Antonio this year... can anyone help?

Thanks for letting me know abour Boerne....I%26#39;ve heard that Boerne is a great place to live from someone else that I work with.... so thank for your input too.

As I get more information, I will let you know... so that you can let me know if you think of another locale that might work out even better for us if Boerne might be too far for some reason.

    Again, thanks for the help!

san antonio is growing outward at a very rapid rate just about everywhere, which is why i suggest towns like Boerne that offer the small town feel and all the benefits that come with it such as the following: good school district, friendly people, quaint shops %26amp; restaurants, and beautiful parks with nature trails alongside cypress trees and Cibolo Creek.....just to name a few things that i like about Boerne. The commute from Boerne down I-10 to Loop 1604 (the outer loop of San Antonio) is 20 minutes.....from there it depends on where your husband works and what time it is. (i%26#39;m usually on the road by 6:30 to avoid much traffic.) by 7:30 the intersection at 1604 %26amp; I-10 is usually congested but it flows....the same is not true for the northeast and east sides of san antonio, where i hear daily radio reports about accidents and major delays on I-35, the north/south corridor for Texas...

I-35 = big trucks always + commuting traffic = forget about it.

all this while i drive easily down 281splitting san antonio in half....speaking of... here%26#39;s some other places to check out that you would have a shorter commute than Boerne down I-10 or 1604 (instead of I-35):

    Fair Oaks Ranch

    Helotes

    Bergheim

see a map for this: http://maps.google.com/

type in Boerne, Tx and look at the roads/towns. i personally like the area from boerne down i-10 to 1604 and west over to 16 and east over to 281. there%26#39;s a lot of development in this area if you can find a deal....it%26#39;s pretty pricey (to me) in many areas. there%26#39;s La Canterra golf course and ';Shops';, Fiesta Texas, and they just opened an IMAX %26amp; more regular theaters, target, ross, jc penney, etc..etc...and a Bass pro shop (very fun...it%26#39;s huge!...full of all kinds of hunting, fishing, camping stuff with stuffed lions and live trout swimming around...it%26#39;s a fun diversion...anyway.).......about 10-20 miles east of there are also many great new gated communities (some with private golf courses) opening up 281 all the way to blanco, but the traffic on 281 is getting worse and worse every day, and when it gets close to san antonio, you go through stoplights....yes, a highway turns into stoplights and creates the biggest cluster f i%26#39;ve ever seen! anyway, the google map shows this by the orange road turning into the narrow yellow road (if you went north on 281 from downtown san antonio, it turns into stoplights just past 1604 through bulverde, where it turns back into a highway for the most part until Blanco) . construction is inevitable on 281 between 1604 to bulverde and there%26#39;s the talk of building a toll road up 281 and even on 1604.....on an existing road? i didn%26#39;t think it worked that way.......bottom line: stick with an orange road route and you would have a better commute in the future. notice that there%26#39;s a break in 1604 just southwest of helotes.....the map speaks a thousand words! EVERY time i%26#39;ve driven through this stretch of 1604 by seaworld, i get in the most horrible traffic...no matter what time of day! this is another example of a highway turning into stoplights! it%26#39;s ridiculous. but, hey, i%26#39;ve learned to avoid these trouble spots throughout san antonio like the plague and have learned the back roads... : - )

now, i haven%26#39;t spoken a word about school districts, because i don%26#39;t have kids and only know from what i heard. i%26#39;ve heard northside is good. i live in the northeast school district, which i%26#39;ve heard it is good as well, yet over-crowded at reagan high and bush middle school, named after the President and First Lady respectively. we%26#39;re not in a Republican district are we? ; - ) these two schools will bus new students to other schools until the fall of 2008, when two new schools are supposed to open in the 281 area. i%26#39;ve heard Alamo Heights schools are wonderful...also, you might consider looking there. some deals can still be found....Alamo Heights (see 281 area just north of downtown)....this is my top choice to live if i could find the right place. it%26#39;s got older, majestic homes in charming neighborhoods surrounded by the Quarry shops/restaurants/golf courses/parks/proximity to downtown...and the list goes on.... sometimes it%26#39;s hit-n-miss. i%26#39;ve seen one block with large mansions and two blocks over i%26#39;ve seen old wood frame houses from 1940 that need a major make-over...prices range all over the place....especially for the nice brick/stone old homes that i just drool over when i drive by.......try realtor.com and just type in the zip 78209 to see.... too much for me on my meager wages. ; -)

good luck on your searching.....hope you find what you%26#39;re looking for.....i always suggest a trip down here to look around. now is a good time. it%26#39;s not crowded, and the weather is generally nice in january.

    Wow,

I couldn%26#39;t have asked for better advice and information. Thanks SO much for your input.... I am extremely appreciative!

I do plan on traveling down there from Chicago when the time comes and my husband says ';Ok, 6 months or less and we must be seriously looking for a place to live';, I will definitely take advantage of the trip down there. All of your input will make this all that much less difficult... so once again, a big thanks to you.

I know you%26#39;re a local expert thru TA, so if it%26#39;s ok with, as need be, I may post other topics if necessary, and hope you can reply to them as you have the time to do so.

    Thanks again!

I am 32 years old and grew up in San Antonio. If you want to live ';in the city'; a great school district is Alamo Heights ISD. The neighborhoods that go to this school district are Alamo Heights, Terrell Hills, and Olmos Park. Houses in these areas are expensive relative to other houses in San Antonio. Alamo Heights High School is a 4A public school but it the school size and quality of education is like a private school.

Reagan High School is another good school in Northeast ISD. The housing for this school is in north central San Antonio.

There are other good school districts outside the city like Comal ISD and Boerne ISD there are good too.

Thanks for your info too! My main goal is to find a great, top-notch school district, and knowing all of that about the Northeast section, etc... will help me quite a bit. I have a Kindergartner, so having this information is key to our success in moving to a place that I know will be great for us all. Thank you for your help!

I, too, greatly appreciate the responses posted. We just returned from a trip to San Antonio. Today we were at the Bass Pro shop. We hiked Friedrich Wilderness this week. Gorgeous! We are looking to relocate to that area in the summer. My husband will need to work very near UTSA. We have college age sons and younger sons, as well.

Which Part of Town For a 3 Night Stay?

I%26#39;ll be going to San Antonio for few days starting January 14 to attend a conference at the Henry B. Gonzalez Center. I%26#39; d like some advice on where to stay. I%26#39;m probably going to book a room on priceline and am likely not going to be able to afford downtown. That being the case I%26#39;m looking for opinions on pricelines divisions of the city - specifically east, south, airport, northeast, medical center, northwest, etc. Can anyone make a recommendation about one area over the other? I%26#39;m not too interested in nightlife, etc around my hotel but am concerned about an easy commute downtown. Are there any of their divisions which would likely be more safe than others? Thanks.

Which Part of Town For a 3 Night Stay?

Being an off-season time of year, you may be surprised at the price you can get downtown through priceline. My sister stayed at the Omni for $60.00/night through priceline. Sorry I can%26#39;t be more help on any of the areas, though. I don%26#39;t know what price range you%26#39;re looking at, but you might try the Menger hotel. It%26#39;s in a historical building on the street side of the Marriot Rivercenter and is pretty nice, but not as well known and therefore not as expensive if I recall correctly.

Which Part of Town For a 3 Night Stay?

i agree in that you might find a deal downtown, and the Menger is a good choice. other inexpensive hotels close to the convention center to consider are La Quinta, Hampton Inn %26amp; possibly the Days Inn. Otherwise, I vote for staying at the medical center area (around I-10 %26amp; Medical or Wurzbach)...plenty of hotels...and a fairly easy commute down I-10 to downtown. the Omni is a good choice there....or Drury....heck, check the Drury downtown?

My thanks to both of you...

Hyatt Hill Country vs. Westin La Canterra

Planning a family reunion for a 50th anniversary celebration for Thanksgiving 2007. The honorees will enjoy golf and spa, along with being together with all the grandchildren. :-) All the attendees are from Texas, albeit scattered across the state, but all have been to San Antonio before.

Which resort do you think has the best spa? The best golf? The best activities for children? The most ';Four Seasons'; type experience?

Does either of the properties offer a condo/casita for families with small children? (No, no one wants to attend the timeshare presentation at Wild Oaks.)

Hyatt Hill Country vs. Westin La Canterra

Boy, this is really a toss-up between two fantastic places. We have stayed at both places (with kids) and so I%26#39;ll give you my opinion...

I feel that the Hyatt is more kid-friendly. There are just a TON of families there. That is where we usually go and where most of our friends go with their kids. Camp Hyatt is for ages 3+ whereas the equivalent at La Canterra is ages 5+ (if your kids would actually stay there - mine won%26#39;t).

That being said, I absolutely love La Cantera too. I%26#39;ve never used either the golf course or the spa, but my inclination is that they have the better of both. My kids actually prefer their pools, but my recollection is that there are ';adult only'; pools too. Not that you%26#39;d be swimming in November, but one of the resorts (can%26#39;t remember which) has a heated pool while the other one doesn%26#39;t.

The Hyatt has the Sunday House available for rent, but there%26#39;s only one (not sure how many separate families you have). We have also stayed in rooms there which were two individual rooms at the end of a hall closed off from the rest of the hall. That worked well.

Depending on the kids you are traveling with, and the families, La Cantera would probably be more enjoyable for the grownups, unless the grownups (like me) will be stressing out about the kids%26#39; behavior being on the rowdy side. LOL.

    Drive to San antonio

Will be in New Orleans hopefully and would like to visit San Antonio. Where would be a good stay overnight on the way as it looks a bit far to drive in 1 day. Also we would need a day or two stop over on the way back.

    Thanks

    Pauline

    Drive to San antonio

The drive SA to NO pre-Katrina took about 10 hours, depending on Houston traffic. It may take a bit longer now, if bridges have been damaged. We always made the drive in a day, but then we%26#39;re Texans, who%26#39;re used to having to drive hours and hours to get anywhere. If you wish to break up the trip, I%26#39;d suggest you start looking for a place anytime after you cross the Texas state line. Interstate 10 has lots and lots of chain motels, so you shouldn%26#39;t have trouble finding a place. If you want a stopover, Houston is a natural. Not much else of interest between the two cities, I%26#39;m afraid.

    Drive to San antonio

Oh, and by the way, stay on I-10 through Houston. Traffic on the 610 loop around the city is much worse than that on 10 going straight through.

thanks onherown, would have taken the loop

I would agree with the Houston stop. Houston is the 4th largest city in the country and lots to do on your return stop over. We drove this route last June and none of the bridges were out from the storms (I assume this is what the other post was referring to).

The only other place for a stop over, would be the Lake Charles area, where there are several casinos for gambling, if that is an interest to you.

    Houston Airport Help- IAH

We are flying to Houston on our way to Guatemala and will have a short time between flights to get from Terminal B to Terminal E. (please don%26#39;t criticize-I didn%26#39;t choose the flights). We are flying in from Toronto.

I have seen people suggest using the TerminaLink train as a fast way to connect without having to re-enter security-which we won%26#39;t have to as our bags are checked right through. On the Terminal map on Continental I see that there is a station in Terminal C and then a walkway to Terminal E or a Station by International Arrivals.

Can you please advise of the best %26amp; fastest way to get from B to E within the secure area?

Also is the airport multi-level or all on one level?

    Thanks

    Keri

    Houston Airport Help- IAH

I just spoke to my brother-in-law who works at IAH, and he told me that you want to take the overhead train on the top level, not the one underground. He was not certain what the correct names of the trains were.

The airport is multi-level. The lowest level is the underground train; the next level is baggage claim; then the airport check-in/gates level; and the highest level would be the overhead train that you want to take.

  • Nice & Reasonably Priced Hotels?

    Hi all-

I will be stopping for a night in Amarillo, TX. I have a 35 lb dog with me.

Quality Inn %26amp; Suites West (6800 I-40 Wes Service Rd)

    downtown hotel near toyota center

has anyone ever stayed at the hilton by the toyota center? is it safe to walk over from hotel to a concert at the center? two ladies goin to concert needing a close hotel,,,,thanks for any inf

    downtown hotel near toyota center

Yes, I%26#39;ve stayed there for the very reason you%26#39;re thinking about staying there. It is a very nice hotel. We only stayed overnight (Dec. 2005; arrived in time for dinner before a show, left the next morning). I walked with my 9-year-old daughter from the Toyota Center to the Hilton (I%26#39;m female) and felt very safe. There were a lot of people making the same trek.

My one complaint was that we had trouble finding something to eat. We were with kids and didn%26#39;t want an elegant sit-down meal. We ended up going to the show early and eating stuff from the Toyota Center snack bars - the polar opposite of an elegant sit-down meal! LOL.

I%26#39;d definitely stay at the hotel again, but in retrospect there are other hotels in the immediate area that would probably be safe enough. Depending on the crowd exiting the show, you%26#39;ll have safety in numbers.

    Have a great time!

    downtown hotel near toyota center

Yes, the Hilton is safe to stay at. The Toyota Center is directly behind (across the street) from the Hilton. You just cross the street behind the hotel and you are there.

thanks for the information, that makes me feel better.

Where and what is West Village in Dallas?

It%26#39;s an area where people live, work, shop and eat. The McKinney Ave Trolley goes by to connect you all the way to the Dallas Museum of Art and lower Mckinney restaurants, hotels, bars.

    Schlitterbahn Galverston information?

Our family would like to visit the Schlitterbahn Gaverston in Christmas. As this is the first year of this park, I would like to know if anyone has visited there in Novermber or Decemeber and what is your feedback? Is the water cold? Is it good for young kids in winter?

    Thanks.

    Schlitterbahn Galverston information?

I%26#39;m assuming your trip is over, but I thought I%26#39;d post my review in case anyone else is considering going over the winter.

We went the day after Christmas and there was maybe 40 or 50 cars in the parking lot. There was hardly anyone there at all! When we first got there and changed in to our suits -- walking down to the water I was beginning to question our decision. Here we were running around in our suits, and the employees working there had sweatshirts and pants on. They advertise it as being ';heated'; indoors, but what I saw were a bunch of heat lamps around and there were maybe 3 big generator things pushing heat. They surrounded it with plastic to keep the heat in.

When we first got in the water it was COLD. You soon got used to it, though, and really the most uncomfortable part was walking up the stairs to the slides. No matter what you do, when it is 50 degrees outside and there is concrete steps with plastic sheeting around the stairwell to keep the weather out, it is going to be freezing. I cannot recall a time my feet have EVER been as cold as they were that day. If you bring water shoes it would be a lot better.

They had four slides open where you rode tubes (I can%26#39;t remember the names of them but they are the yellow and pink ones) and they also had the Rohr and Fast and Furious open. Those two ended outside, and you had to race to the hot tub right next to the ending to get warm. The bar was open in the hot tub, and we had a great time relaxing in it. They also had the wave pool open outside, but when my daughter and I ventured out there, we were the only ones in it and it was rather boring. They had the river running in a circe around the enclosed area, and that was a lot of fun.

Overall, it is a tossup. You go in the summer and you have to deal with lines. You go in the winter and freeze a little bit, but there are absolutely no lines. But you also don%26#39;t get access to as many slides and features of the park. So it just depends on what is more important. We had a great time going and my kids are still talking about it 2 weeks later. I don%26#39;t know if my husband and I are up to another trip for a little bit, though. Maybe when it heats up a little outside it would be more comfortable.

    Oaklawn area hotels?

I know the Melrose in highly regarded, but is there anything else very near? (less pricey?) sure don%26#39;t want a dirty old motel, either. thanks

    Oaklawn area hotels?

    That%26#39;s it in Oaklawn.

    Oaklawn area hotels?

There are some nice bed and breakfasts in the area close to Oaklawn. You can go to www.bedandbreakfast.com to see listings. Good luck.

Is there a reason you want to be in the Oaklawn area in particular? Oaklawn is very nice but it is a small geographical area, therefore perhaps only the Melrose qualifies as ';Oaklawn';.

The Market Center area hotels such as Bradford Suites, Fairfield, Embassy, Homewood, Sheraton, Hawthorn, Hilton Garden Inn, etc. are all fairly close to Oak Lawn.

want to look at condos in Dallas area, and was told Oaklawn was very highly regarded, with the Melrose being the best in area. thanks to all of you.

  • Amtrak Train roundtrip -- Irving to Austin and San Antonio

I am planning to take Amtrak Monday January 8 to Austin and spend the night in a Bed and Breakfast near the train station. On Tuesday I will go to San Antonio and spend two nights there in two different bed and breakfast near the train station. Thursday I will return from San Antonio straight through to Ft. Worth, then catch the Trinity Rail Express back to Irving. I will probably upgrade to a roomette for at least part of the trip and maybe all of it.

Amtrak goes on to Houston but I do not have time for that extension on this trip.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Have you tried the Texas Eagle part of Amtrak? Is there a ';best'; position on a train similar to some people prefering certain areas of a plane? Do you have suggestions for places to eat? Of course I will not rent a car.

Amtrak Train roundtrip -- Irving to Austin and San Antonio

My husband and I took Amtrak roundtrip from downtown Dallas to San Antonio. We also rented a ';roomette';, even though I don%26#39;t think it was called that at the time. It was basically a small room with two seats that faced each other. These seats would recline and turn into a sleeping berth, and another berth would let down from the wall to become a second sleeping berth. The room is very small and we spent much of our time in the observation car. They show movies in the observation car, and have seating next to large windows through which you can view the passing countryside.

Since renting one of these small rooms is considered first class, lunch and dinner were included in the price of the fare, and you are the first people called to the dining car when meals are served. There was also a small bar serving beer and wine on the lower floor of the train. We were able to wander the train, and also sat in some empty seats for a while in the coach area. At that time, they also had a smoking car for people who wished to smoke. This trip took place several years ago, and things may have changed since that time.

The train traveled through several very unattractive parts of Dallas and Ft. Worth, but once we got out of the cities, the ride became much more enjoyable. I would do it again if I wanted to take a leisurely trip to San Antonio.

Staying @ Hyatt Wild Oak Ranch this weekend...

Hi! My husband and I are taking a mini-vacation to San Antonio this weekend. We will be staying at the Hyatt Wild Oak Ranch. I have reserved a rental car during our stay. I%26#39;ve never been to San Antonio so I would like to get tips from the locals to make our visit enjoyable. What should we do other than visiting the Alamo and Riverwalk? Is it a good idea to rent a car? We are low-key but fun loving couple. Any advice would be highly appreciated! Thanks!

What types of activities are you looking for?

Live music would be on the top of my list for evening activities. Live music in San Antonio benefits greatly by being close to Austin the self proclaimed ';live music capital of the world.'; We%26#39;re definitely spoiled here getting regional and national acts wanting to fill out their tour with a date in San Antonio before or after playing Austin. There are many great, intimate venues booking great music.

A quick drive to Helotes about 20 miles north towards Bandera gets you to John T Floores Country Store http://www.liveatfloores.com/ an authentic Texas dance hall. thinking about s.a. this may. What is weather like ? Is there anything special happening?

    weather

Weather should be great. If you can move your plans up just a little, I recommend visiting in late April during Fiesta.

    Here%26#39;s the website for Fiesta - http://www.fiesta-sa.org/

I like to use Weather Underground%26#39;s history to see the previous years. Go to there website, enter the zip code for the area and hit enter. When the page reloads, scroll down to the section labeled History %26amp; Almanac, choose a date, click go. You%26#39;ll get detailed info for that day, but click on Monthly, and scroll down about mid page and you get a calendar with the weather for the whole month. This is my favorite way to get a sense for what to expect.

    President's Weekend - need ideas

We%26#39;re staying at a place called Microtel Inn which says it%26#39;s 2 miles from the Riverwalk. We will have our own vehicle but we do not know where to park. We plan on attending the Mardi Gras Arts %26amp; Crafts on the Riverwalk, riding the boat, visiting the Alamo, and eating at HuHot for sure. We%26#39;re driving in really late on the night of the 16th and leaving out early Sunday morning. I really would like to see one more thing on Saturday possibly in the afternoon or evening. Any suggestions for a couple of 30 y/o? We aren%26#39;t into clubs, pubs, or theme parks. Thanks!

    President's Weekend - need ideas

Would it make more sense just to leave the car at the hotel and catch a cab for the 2 miles or so? How much would a cab ride like that cost?

    President's Weekend - need ideas

If you like history, I would suggest visiting the Institute of Texan Cultures in HemisFair Park and then riding to the top of the Tower of the Americas for dinner or just to check out the views of the city. The tower is right next to the Institute of Texan Cultures.

FYI, the Microtel Inn is in a sketchy area so I would not suggest walking around that area at night.

What hotel would you recommend that is the closest to the Riverwalk but will not break the wallet?

If you’re staying at the “Downtown” Microtel on S. Frio Street you are on the very edge of the tourist area. During the day and early evening the downtown “Trolley” will be a great way to travel. At night I’d use my car or a cab.

As to Sunday morning, there’s always the zoo. They open at 9:00 am and it’s about ten bucks a person. http://www.sazoo-aq.org/ Driving the Mission Trail is also an option. Check out the National Park’s website http://www.nps.gov/saan/

If you’re heading back on I-10, I recommend The Caverns of Sonora, about 170 miles west of San Antonio. http://www.cavernsofsonora.com/ This cave has some of the best formations you%26#39;ll ever see.

If you could treat your significant other to a romantic, special day, what would you do?

    No dressy/expensive restaurants please.

romantic things to do and places to eat

OK ';romantic'; is in the eye of the beholder - One of my favorite romantic dinners is to pack a picnic - cheese, bread, fruit, wine and head up to Canyon Dam on a clear moonless night.

Planning a visit for the first week of June. Any info on the LaQuinta?

Is it on the trolley/streetcar line.? Also, can I purchase trolley day passes in advance, on line? Lastly, will be traveling on Amtrak. How far is the station from LaQuinta or Riverwalk? Thanks, T.

TJ - I was there this weekend. There are several La Quinta%26#39;s in the area. One La Quinta, Convention Center on Blulm Street, was across the street from the Rivercenter Mall, which is the main riverwalk entrance. It is also located within walking distance (less than 1 mile) of the Amtrak. Here%26#39;s a description of the layout: Amtrak is east of Highway 37 about 2 streets. La Quinta is on the westside of Highway 37. The hotel is in between HI37 frontage road, which is named Elm St. and Bowie St. Check out:

    www.sanantoniovisit.com/maps

This has a map of the riverwalk area %26amp; Amtrak Station. The riverwalk is accessible from the street like a subway with stairs or an elevator.

Downtown is very walkable. We walked from the Almo to the King William District to the Guenther House to have breakfast on Sunday.

Wanting quite and adventure in one weekend

    Hello from Colorado!

My husband and I are flying into Corpus Christi on Thursday, Feb. 1st and flying back out Monday the 5th. We are looking forward to our first weekend without the kids in awhile. We wish to do and see a few things and also just relax in some quite and peace.

We’ve looked into staying at Knolle Farm and Ranch Bed and Breakfast in Sandia, TX but would also like to see the USS Lexington and driving down North Padre Island. We might also wish to do other things around the Corpus Christi area. Is staying in Sandia and driving into Corpus Christi a few times realistic in terms of traffic and distance? Any other bed and breakfasts or such closer that still might offer that slow down effect?

We are also looking into some other things to do which might include: 9 holes of golf at a beginner friendly course, a place to rent and use a canoe or kayak, although we%26#39;ve never done either, skeet shooting, perhaps horseback riding or just spending some quite time outdoors.

We’ve never tried snorkeling either. Is this something we can do in Feb around Corpus Christi?

Ideas, suggestions and thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Wanting quite and adventure in one weekend

The drive from Sandia will take about 45 minutes. I don%26#39;t think traffic will be an issue.

There is a great B%26amp;B in Corpus called The George Blucher House. Although we haven%26#39;t stayed yet, we%26#39;re planning to stay in March for our anniversary. It gets great reviews, and I haven%26#39;t heard one negative thing about it. However, it doesn%26#39;t have the wide open spaces of the Knolle Ranch.

There are places that rent kayaks in Port Aransas. Those types of things are sometimes available on the Bayfront in downtown Corpus, but I think that%26#39;s just in the summer.

    Longhorns?

You mean ';Longhorns'; as in ';livestock';? You want to buy cattle?

    Longhorns?

If anyone knows the answer, chime in. There are a few cuties on the baseball team I%26#39;d love to buy!

I must correct myself. I mean a pair of longhorns to put above a fireplace (and I don%26#39;t mean two football players! :)

also looking for some austhentic cowboy boots?

    and the seda candle factory?

    any help is greatly appreciated!

LOL!! Okay!! Sorry... I didn%26#39;t mean to be flippant. I didn%26#39;t know if you meant UT paraphenalia or a couple of steer, so I didn%26#39;t know if I should refer you to The Drag or a ranch outside of town. :-)

I don%26#39;t know where the Seda candles are made, but here%26#39;s the website where you can find out contact information:

    http://www.sedafrance.com/contact/index.shtml

For boots, I%26#39;d suggest Allens Boots. Personally, I%26#39;d run into the nearest Cavendar%26#39;s, but I%26#39;m not sure that%26#39;d be as fun of an experience for you. LOL

    www.allensboots.com

If you go to the Allens Boots on South Congress, maybe you%26#39;ll find the longhorns in a nearby store. :-) I honestly don%26#39;t know where in Austin to find some.

    Does anyone else?

Probably depends on the material you are looking for. Cast bronze? I would think some of the stores on South Congress might be a good bet since you are looking for something pretty eclectic there.

    Nightlife for 30 somethings??

Hi all! Myself and two buddies are finally getting out of dodge (CA) for the weekend of 1/26-1/29 on our first trip to San Antone and I%26#39;m hoping to get feedback about the nightlife scene for mature adults.Don%26#39;t get me wrong, dancing or relaxing into the wee hours of the morning would be okay. Just not into house music or all hip-hop type clubs. Anyway, any input would be great and San Antonio here we come!!!

    Nightlife for 30 somethings??

Here are some places that you may try all on or near the Riverwalk

    Polyesters - Dance Club

Howl at the Moon - Piano Bar

Swig- Martini Bar %26amp; sometimes live music

Mad Dogs- Irish Pub and dance music in the later hours

Medusa Lounge, Zen bar, Suede Lounge, V Bar - Social and more upscale

    Outside Downtown:

    Cowboys - Country Western

Dolce, The Point, Posh - upscale lounges

Stone Werks - restaurant/bar (Thursday nights)

    Nightlife for 30 somethings??

Those are great choices for the more typical night life. I prefer live music, it may not be what you’re looking for, but here’s the info:

    Riverwalk Hotel

    Hello All!!

I%26#39;m doing something I%26#39;ve never done before... staying in downtown San Antonio!! Guidance needed please.

Family of four coming in for a party being held at Zinc (207 N. Presa). I%26#39;d like to stay in the closest hotel possible (kids with babysitter in room). We%26#39;re used to resort-type hotels, so I don%26#39;t want an itty-bitty room, and I don%26#39;t want to hear so much Riverwalk noise, but would like to be on/spitting distance from the Riverwalk. Room Service will be needed, connecting rooms important too.

I%26#39;m thinking Westin. What do y%26#39;all think? TIA!

    Riverwalk Hotel

Westin is a great choice....you really can%26#39;t go wrong there. You might also check the Watermark. they have a great spa: http://www.watermarkhotel.com/

    Riverwalk Hotel

    Thanks TexasHam!

Yeah, I wondered about the Watermark too... It looks as though it%26#39;s closer to the restaurant. I was worried about (1) the size of the rooms and (2) the noise from the Riverwalk. If I remember correctly, the Westin is in a quieter area, and I had planned on asking for an upper level room.

Anyone with any reassurances for me about the Watermark? Is it in fact closer to Zinc? Does it have room service and connecting rooms? Guess I can call and find out...

No time for the spa! LOL... don%26#39;t I wish!?!?!

It does have connecting rooms and room service... I called. :-) And the website shows some pretty sweet looking rooms.

But I%26#39;d still appreciate anyone%26#39;s feedback about the noise level?

Both hotels are about the same distance to ZInc so that should not dictate which hotel you choose. Sorry, but I can%26#39;t help you on the noise level.

We%26#39;ve stayed at the Westin Riverwalk many times, on the river side and noise has not been a problem. Do ask for a room on a higher leverl.

A little late, but for anyone reading this, you%26#39;ll want to check out our property, Old Town Square in Bandera (formerly the Frontier Hotel). We%26#39;re very biker friendly!

We just renovated our historic hotel to have fun theme rooms (like the John Wayne room, Pancho Villa room, etc). We also have a great patio restaurant, Texaritas, serving juicy mesquite-grilled steaks and frozen margaritas, among other things. And we have The Purple Cow Saloon, with full bar and live music. We%26#39;re right in the middle of Bandera on Main Street, so we%26#39;re convenient to everything Bandera has to offer.

Bikers, you can park out in front of our huge patios during the day to keep an eye on your bike, and in our private courtyard if you are staying overnight. Check us out!

we are visiting texas soon, ie houston, how easy is it to get to bandera, we would like to spend a day+ night on a real cowboy ranch, can anyone tell me the easiest transport to get there

For anyone wanting to stay at a really fun, well-run dude ranch, check out the Mayan Ranch which is run by the Hicks family. Beautiful property on the outskirts of town, reasonably priced, excellent meals (home-made!), and lots of activities options. Great saloon and clean, comfortable lodging. We took our family from Germany and they (and we) will remember it for the rest of their lives!

  • Two weeks in Texas - any help gratefully received.

My friend and I are hoping to fly out to Texas at the end of January to vist another friend who is currently living in Houston. We%26#39;d obviously like to spend a few days with her in Houston, but otherwise would like to see some of the highlights of the state. We don%26#39;t necessarily want to drive around, but will do, if its the only option. As part of the trip we%26#39;d like to spend a few days at a Dude Ranch.

Any suggestions gratefully received. We are two (nearly 30, but not quite) english ladies/girls!

Two weeks in Texas - any help gratefully received.

If you type ';dude ranch'; in the search box for Texas, you will see lots of threads from last year. Bandera and the surrounding area has lots of dude ranches.

As you know Texas is very big with very little public transportation such as trains. So you will probably need to drive to see any areas other than Houston. I would definitely plan a trip Austin, maybe stopping in San Antonio. If you have extra time, I think you might like Fort Worth- lots of music, clubs, museums and shopping.

Two weeks in Texas - any help gratefully received.

And on your way to Austin stop in Brenham to tour the Blue Bell Ice Cream factory. Look them up for available tours, tasting.

If you go to San Antonio walk the Riverwalk, but have dinner at La Fogata (has a website), which is not on the Riverwalk and in a different part of town entirely.

Breakfast - The Guenther House (has a website) at the Pioneer Baking Mix Factory, yum-yum.

Or just stay in the coastal area and drive east toward Louisiana.

No trip to Texas is complete without visiting San Antonio for a taste of the Mexican influence on that part of the country and the Texas Hill Country around Austin. Like another poster said, you cannot get around Texas without a car unless you plan to fly. You can fly from Houston to San Antonio to Dallas/Fort Worth.

Big cities are great, but do yourselves a favor and visit the little cities and towns too for an authentic Texas experience. In the Hill Country there are many small communities with lots of interesting shops, museums and characters. West Texas is great, too, but may be a bit out of the way for your trip -- this time.

When you do get to go west you have to fly into Midland. Rent a car as there is no good way to get around. You%26#39;ll want to visit the Petroleum Museum, have some BBQ at KDs or JCs and Mexican food at Ajuua%26#39;s. Then drive to Fort Davis to visit McDonald Observatory for evening star-gazing parties year-round in the mild winters, hiking in the Davis State Park, and a midnight drive to Marfa to see the mysterious Marfa Lighs. Stay at one of the many b%26amp;bs in Fort Davis or at the Hotel Limpia downtown, or at the Indian Lodge Hotel in the state park.

Gosh there%26#39;s so much to do in Texas. I lived there most of my life and haven%26#39;t done one tenth of what there is to do.

    Have fun!

    PS.

There%26#39;s a dude ranch in Fort Davis called the Prude Ranch. The meals are fantastic!

If your Houston friend can get a day off work, have her take you to Galveston Island. It%26#39;s only an hour or so from Houston, and there%26#39;s lots to do and see there. If it%26#39;s operating, take the Duck Tour to see the island by land and sea. The old truck/boat will show you the historic parts of the island and give you an idea of what you want to go back to explore after the tour. If you visit The Strand, the most historic part of the island, I recommend dinner at Luigi%26#39;s. Oh, and take the free ferry ride to the other side of Galveston Bay. Get off the ferry and turn around and ride it right back. The round trip takes 30-60 minutes. You might see bottlenose dolphins following the ferry.

I think you have to identify the types of things that you like to do. What are your interests? If you are into art, theater, museums then by all means go to Dallas/Fort Worth. Allocate3 to 4 days for such things as: Meadows Museum in Dallas( probably the best collection of Spanish Art outside of the Prado.) Nasher Sculpture Garden, reputed to be the best collection of Modern Sculpture in the US and the Art Museum of Dallas as well as the Women%26#39;s Museum and the Crow Collection of Asian Art. In Fort Worth you will find the Kimball, a gem of a fine arts museum, also see the Amon Carter Museum of Western Art. and also a Modern Art Museum and a Cow Girl Museum. Dallas has some 30 different theater companies, so something will be playing. There are all types of music venues from the Dallas Symphony and Dallas Opera to Hip Hop, Country and anything else.

On the internet check out the Dallas Convention Bureau. Try a google on Texas Tourism. The State Highway Department has a good site that can lead you to festivals etc. These and other web sites will give you plenty of information.

There are lots of interesting places and a variety of sights.

Search for your interests and plan accordingly. Driving is pretty easy here in moving from one place to another. Allow 50 mph average if you are covering any distance. Speed limits of course are higher but you need to be able to stop and enjoy something as you gol

Definitely Austin and surrounds, with or without San Antonio. Marginally better weather this time of year, and it is a university town noted for its music and nightlife scene. It is also the state capital. I%26#39;m afraid driving is a must in the U.S., and especially in Texas! Don%26#39;t forget the petrol is only about 30p a litre, though :)

Plenty to do around Houston. It%26#39;s a big city. Maybe catch a basketball game. The Houston Rockets have a great new facilty and tickets can be had fairly cheap(13 dollars for some). We have plenty of Museums right here in Houston. www.houstonmuseumdistrict.org/default.asp鈥?/a>

Why drive 4 to 5 hours to visit Dallas. Skip the Riverwalk in San Antonio. If you want a similar experience drive down to the Kemah Boardwalk. It%26#39;s right on the bay and only 30 minutes from Houston.

    kemahboardwalk.com/flash_content/flash_conte鈥?/a>

Rides, games, great view and good seafood.

For the dud ranch thing close to Houston try this place

    http://www.texasranchlife.com/

here is an article on the ranch from the houston newspaper

    chron.com/disp/鈥?244984.html

You also could make a trip to Fort worth Texas. Home of the historic Fort worth stock yards. Visit Billy Bobs country and western bar. Watch some real bull riding. It%26#39;s 4.5 hours from Houston but if you like the cowboy thing it%26#39;s a great town to visit. If you have any questions let me know. Cheers

I understand about renting a car. I would never go to England and rent a car.

There is Amtrak Train that goes out of Houston and arrives in Fort Worth. (You can find out more about it by using Google: Texas Amtrak train) You can take the Trintiy Railway Express to go between Fort Worth and Dallas. The prices are very reasonable.

There are bed and breakfast that you can find on www.bedandbreakfast.com. Owners may be willing to %26#39;pick you up%26#39; at the station or maybe they will be accessible by public transportation. The bed and breakfasts will give you a better feel for the ';real Texas'; rather than just staying at some big city hotel. Some of the Bed and Breakfasts are rural or Dude Ranch style.

Good luck and enjoy your trip.

.....skip the River Walk in San Antonio???? Never! San Antonio and Austin were fantastic places to visit along with Hill Country but the best place of all was Big Bend NP, but that will probably be out of reach.

Can%26#39;t judge for Fort Worth/Dallas and Houston, but we%26#39;ll make that up this year october visiting those cities and also Galveston and the coast where we are planning a couple of days at the beach. Anybody knows of a great place to stay with direct beachaccess and sandy beaches near Galveston? We already visited Tx for three weeks in 2005 and now we are coming back for another 2-3 weeks. Can%26#39;t wait....

tripadvisor info not too up to date....

    I just clicked on the

    ';Weekend getaway Houston, Texas';

featured in an email from trip advisor today and it talks about the Six Flags / Astrodome entertainment complex. Well, that Six Flags themepark closed in 2005! Six Flags does have a ';SplashTown'; in North Houston, but that is not anywhere near the Astrodome.

tripadvisor info not too up to date....

This area is now considered the Reliant Stadium area. Lots of events here from conventions, football, rodeo, you name it.

Trip advisor really should update this information.

I%26#39;ve eaten at the Clay Pit in Austin and it was the best Indian restaurant I%26#39;ve tried. Try the naan bread. Some entrys are rather hot, some are mild. Take your pick or go as a group and mix %26#39;em up.

    What to do in Galveston

    Hi,

We have osome time around March 2nd and 3rd and then again on March 10th to the 13th to spend in Galveston. We would like to find some music events, blues clubs, nightlife, sites to see, things not to miss, etc. Any suggestions will be welcomed.

    Thanks!

    What to do in Galveston

I would look at galveston.com for the calender of events and attractions.

    What to do in Galveston

My in-laws live not too far from Galveston and whenever we go visit a must do for us is eating a late breakfast at The Mosquito Cafe and make sure to sit outside in the back. A very nice quaint atmosphere and topnotch food. If you are visiting Galveston you must walk the strand as that%26#39;s the popular shopping/browsing area. Taking a ferry boat to Bolivar might be fun for something different as well.

A must see ~~~ Moody Gardens

We have some cool bars and clubs in the Strand District, in addition there is Woody%26#39;s (biker/but nice) out west- past the Seawall.

Mario%26#39;s excellent food, Spot good but expensive.

    Oyster Bar-excellent gumbo- Strand

Tour at least one of the ';Broadway Beauties';- info on Galveston.com- gorgeous historic mansions on the main drag.

    Ghost tours are also popular.

Cool clubs and trendy shops on Post Office Street. Rudy %26amp; Pacos for dinner or Saltwater Grill.

Pretty much everything in downtown Fort Worth is ';close'; to the train station- it isn%26#39;t that big down there. But depending on where you stay, it could be 10 blocks away. That%26#39;s a perfect hotel for a concert...you will be safe.

    houston hotel downtown

That is the closest hotel to Toyota Center. Great to walk to Toyota Center but there isn%26#39;t anywhere else (restaurants, clubs, etc) around it to walk that would be safe. It is sort of on the outside of downtown.

when are u comin to town? there actually are restaurants within walkin distance.. there is one about 6 or 7 blocks that has everything. Picazo Restaurant Bar %26amp; Grill, 1421 preston @ labranch. try it out.

It is okay to walk 6 or 7 blocks in that area during the day but wouldn%26#39;t advise it at night. I believe the Hilton has a shuttle bus that will take you to the busier entertainment areas of downtown.

Also, you could explore downtown... which is only a few miles away, to where you could take a taxi or the light rail to the medical center/Herman park area.

The Warwick would have been great for its location and general luxury, but unfortunately Warwick = ZaZa. They%26#39;ve gone for some sort of hipper remodeling scheme and apparently won%26#39;t be open for a couple of more months.

    Hotel/condo/restaurants

My husband and I are going to be going to SPI the first part of February. I%26#39;ve been looking at hotel reviews, and also considering renting a condo.. We would like to be close (walking distance) to restaurants and bars, and I can%26#39;t tell by the maps where on the island we should be looking for accommodations. Beachview would be GREAT, but isn%26#39;t absolutely necessary.

We%26#39;re pretty laid back, and would like to enjoy some oysters, some seafood, and a cocktail

    Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

    Hotel/condo/restaurants

Read a post back about restaurants, the highlights are mentioned there. How long do you plan on staying on SPI? In my opinion, I think a condo is the way to go. There are many that are beach side. Some rent through agencies and others have an onsite office. It depends on how much $$ you want to spend, although winter rates (lower) will apply for when you will be there. I prefer the southern end of the island (closer to the causeway) to stay. Will you have a car? The island is long, but there is a bus that travels up and down the island that can drop you off places, and it is free, I think.

    Hotel/condo/restaurants

    Linlo-

Thanks for your post - We%26#39;re staying only 5 nights, and plan to have a car. I%26#39;m having a difficult time finding a condo that%26#39;s available - I have found one - at Fiesta Sol, on Amberjack street. It%26#39;s not on the Ocean, but it looks like it couldn%26#39;t be too far.. Do you know the area?

It is ';winter Texan'; season, so a lot of places are booked, but I am sure there is still plenty available. The location of that Fiesta Sol is good, but the place looks somewhat worn. Check out dancercondorentals.com and see if they have anything available. This is a new facility and looks nice from the outside. It is not on the beach, but close. Also look at bridgepointresort.com (upper end $), but I am pretty sure they still have units available, and the desk people can probably recommend something for you if they are full or out of your price range. See about Saida, too. Another idea, go to spionline.com and follow the accomodations link, read through the page and look at ';super duper lodging classifieds'; where people have their own condos listed...one just became available on the 7th that looks great. Good luck and let me know what you turn up.

    June in Santonio

Was thinking of visiting San Antonio week commencing 11th June, did I read somewhere that there is some kind of festival on, or am I mistaken?

    June in Santonio

You%26#39;re probably thinking of the Texas Folklife Festival thta is held on the grounds of the Institute of Texan Cultures in Hemisfair Plaza. The dates this year are June 8-10. The Festival celebrates the contributions in food, music, dance, and crafts of immigrants to Texas from more than 40 nationalities/ethnic groups. I%26#39;ve heard that this festival served asthe model for the National Folklife Festival held on the Mall in Washington.

You%26#39;ll find an amazing variety of ethnic treats, entertainment, demonstrations, storytelling, and music. The Festival%26#39;s wesite is:

    texancultures.utsa.edu/tff/tff2006/index.html

    June in Santonio

SARider is right on! It%26#39;s a great festival - not too crowded, but big enough to make it interesting. Weather can be hot (not as hot as it usually gets in August when it used to be held) so be prepared.

    Car Hire

Any advice on car hire in Houston. I want to rent in downtown Houston for approx 10 days in February , all inclusive with no extras, would be grateful for any suggestions. Thanks

    Car Hire

    Rental car companies in Houston are Hertz.car, alamo.com, nationalrentacar.com, budget.com, avis.com, enterprise.com, thrifty.com, among others.

When inputing a rate quote, taxes will be shown and then options to chose extra. Decline the insurance, if your personal insurance or credit card offers it. Most US card companies include this on policies but you%26#39;ll need to check for your coverage. Just decline all other charges, especially the gas one, and it%26#39;ll give you a very close estimate of total charges.

    Car Hire

Consider whether or not you want the unlimited mileage rate. I%26#39;m not sure why you%26#39;re coming (i.e. business trip where you%26#39;ll be in a conference room all day or pleasure trip where you%26#39;ll be driving around trying different restaurants) but one can put a suprising amount of miles on a vehicle in Houston. I think it costs more, but it%26#39;s cheaper in the long run than if you go over your milege, and adds flexibility to your trip. :-)

Thank you for all that advice, am getting there!

    Hi,

I know you said you want to pickup in downtown Houston but pickup at the airport (Bush) is very convenient to All major car rental companies and might be good transportation to and from downtown. (Parking might be an issue, not sure.)

Yes, we are staying in Houston for 5 nights and I don%26#39;t think we need a car as we are going to a wedding and I think we will be busy with that for 3/4 days. However we plan to leave Houston and go to San Antonio, Austin and Galveston for about 10 days. We could rent a car on arrival at the airport but we would probably just leave it parked for the first few days in the Houston Hotel. Also I note parking at hotels can be expensive. The Hotel Emily Morgan where we are staying in S.A. is $20 a day!! Really appreciate all the advice given, many thanks, hello from Dublin Ireland.

Oh... not to be negative, but don%26#39;t rule out needing a car just to go to a wedding in Houston! I%26#39;ve been to many weddings in Houston. :-)

The rehearsal dinner will be in one place (need a car to get there), the wedding will be in another place (need a car to get there) and then the reception will be in another place. Please, please check with the bride/groom/parents thereof before saying you won%26#39;t need a car in Houston. There may be a shuttle provided as part of the wedding, but most often there%26#39;s not.

Honestly... it%26#39;s a huge city. I%26#39;m not sure where you are staying, but if you have any needs whatsoever (tie got soup spilled on it, ran out of contact solution, starving for barbecue) you will need a car.

Ewwww, that%26#39;s horrible. There%26#39;s no best way I%26#39;m aware of unless you have a really good friend to chauffer you. It%26#39;s almost worth renting a car with no drop-off fee to go from oneairport to the other. Road signage is good.

Taxi will probably cost you $75 each way. There are several shuttle services close to the baggage claim areas at each airport. If you google %26lt;hobby airport shuttle IAH%26gt; you%26#39;ll probably get the info you need. A shuttle is minimum $28 each, one way. (see www %26lt;dot%26gt;houstonproshuttle%26lt;dot%26gt;com/ServicesRate%26lt;dot%26gt;html

Budget 2 hours or so for a 1-way trip that time of day. If you book well ahwead of time, you%26#39;ll have a better chance of not waiting to long for the shuttle. Not fun.

    Lowest cost Hobby to IAH?

During the rush hour, PM, I need to get to IAH from Hobby. What is the lowest cost option and going downtown on the bus won%26#39;t work as we will have two bags + carry ons.each. Thanks.

  • Which to stay in: Downtown or Reliant-Med Center area

Single female in town for a couple of days. Don%26#39;t want to be in a remote place where I can walk around out of the hotel. Price is not a concern. Please help?

Which to stay in: Downtown or Reliant-Med Center area

My wife works in the Medical Center area, and I wouldn%26#39;t want her walking around there after dark. Also, there isn%26#39;t much to do down there unless you%26#39;re at one of the hospitals for treatment, frankly.

Downtown would be okay, the Galleria area would be ideal.

Which to stay in: Downtown or Reliant-Med Center area

Don%26#39;t stay in Reliant area - Med Center -- okay if you oare there to visit one of the hospitals, centers, etc.

Downtown - is good if you stay in the main restaurant/club area. Hotels in that area (where is it okay to walk around at night) are The Magnolia and Hotel Icon. Because you mentioned specific areas - am assuming you need to be in the Reliant or Med Center area during your trip here. When you stay downtown you can take light rail to reach either of these areas.

Definitely Downtown over Med Center but like the other person suggested, Galleria is ideal like the Hilton Post Oak or the Westin Oaks or Westin Galleria.

I%26#39;ve had the honor of staying in all three areas. Definitely the downtown area. Try to catch a play at the Alley Theatre or go to the Opera. The Galleria area is fine and the hotels mentioned are great, but after you%26#39;ve hung out at the Galleria, there%26#39;s not much to do. There is definitely more variety downtown.

As someone else mentioned, the only reason to stay in the Medical area is if you have business there.

??s Checking for hotels for last minute rooms

We have been told to book a reasonable hotel and then call 24 hours before arrival to a nicer hotel, they recommended Emily Morgan or Menger and get a great last minute rate. Is this a common practice in the area? I%26#39;m willing to try it but my DH isn%26#39;t too keen.

I just want to be downwtown in riverwalk area. I don%26#39;t want to pay over 150 per night and would like free parking and free breakfast to boot. We will be there for 2 nights Sun and Mon.

??s Checking for hotels for last minute rooms

I think that%26#39;s a good tactic for any area. I just checked Hotwire for tonight - $92 for a 4-star on the Riverwalk. I don%26#39;t know of any downtown hotel that offers free parking, most are in the $20 range. Free breakfast, free internet, and pretty much anything else free usually doesn%26#39;t exist at a 4-star downtown hotel. Still, for a nice treat, a 4-star at less than a hundred bucks is great!

HOTEL AND SHUTTLE pre cruise in galveston

    Hi,

Thanks for your soda advice on my post!

My husband and I are travelling this coming week end. We found that renting a car one way was much cheaper and provided the freedom we like to shop. Okay, I shop, he lets me.

We are staying at the Marriott that is close to the hobby airport. There are tons of hotels around there and we found it was less expensive than Galveston.

The hotel we are at has the Baybrook Mall about 9 miles away (thanks mapquest) and I am guessing the stores you would like would be there. If you had a car it would be fast and easy.

I also found out - too late- that if you are coming in at the hobby airport many hotels close by have free pickup. I cannot remember which one, but one I saw had a shuttle to the port as well. Not free, but reasonable.

    Have a great time!

I think that NCL cruises out of Houston - not Galveston, you better check on that, don%26#39;t want to miss the boat!

  • Dallas to Amarillo

About how many hours would it take to drive from Dallas to Amarillo?

We will be driving from Houston so we will need to stop for a night somewhere en route to Amarillo. Any ideas on good but moderate accomodations?

About how many more hours from Amarillo to Santa Fe? any scenic routes I should take?

    thanks!

    Dallas to Amarillo

I would use Mapquest to get general mileage and directions. I always add an hour (at least) to the Mapquest driving time estimates. They go by mileage, not traffic.

That said, if you type in Dallas to Amarillo, they have you going through Dallas (their estimate is 6 hours, 360 miles) and over on the Airport Freeway (183), cutting up 114 to 287. If you want to stop for the night in the Dallas/FW area, staying in Grapevine might be a good idea- there are lots of chain type hotels up that way. I would try to avoid this route during rush hour- shoot for noon on a weekday.

Mapquest lists Amarillo to Santa Fe as about 280 miles, a little over 4 hours.

    Dallas to Amarillo

I%26#39;ve done Houston to Amarillo a couple of times and it%26#39;s BO-RING. Definitely stay in the DFW area, if not drive all the way through, because your only other choice is Wichita Falls or Childress.

Amarillo to Santa Fe is about 4 hours, IIRC. Even if the mapping sites say otherwise, take I-40 to US 84 to I-25 South. Going Albuquerque takes a lot longer.

If you really want a scenic route, there%26#39;s what%26#39;s called the ';Turquoise Trail'; which runs through Cerrillos and the artist community of Madrid. It%26#39;s mostly NM State Highway 14. To get there from I-40, you can either take NM 344 north from Edgewood, or stay on I-40 and go to NM 14, which will also take you up near Sandia Peak (DEFINITELY worth it).

We drove from Amarillo to Sante Fe, visited Cadillac Ranch west of Amarillo first made a stop at the excellent visitor center in NM along I40 first, pickup brochures and hoteldiscounts and drove from Tucumcari along NM to Las Vegas, NM, a very nice town and then to the Santa Fe area. This is not the fastest route but it is a scenic drive. And if you have time, visit Las Vegas NM too. Also the mentioned Turquoise trail is scenic but you%26#39;ll miss Las Vegas.

    thanks everyone!

to cover more ground, i think we will stay in wichita falls or childress, then.

Since we won%26#39;t be stopping in dallas/ft. worth, do you have any routes that will help us beat the city traffic?

Has anyone camped in state parks near santa fe? I see two: Pecos and Fenton Lake. I%26#39;ll start a forum on that, but just thought i%26#39;d ask you all first. I know you are well-travelled.

    cheers!

I%26#39;m guessing you%26#39;re coming up I-45 from Houston to Dallas. You can take I-20 west to either 408 (Mountain Creek Parkway, I think is the name of the exit--this becomes Loop 12) or farther west to 360, both of which will take you up to 114, and bypass Dallas traffic. Those are much less trafficked streets, particularly during rush hours. Still busy, but normally not at a standstill.

I wouldn%26#39;t go any farther than 360 to cut to the north because past that point you start adding significant mileage to the drive.

Also, if you%26#39;re having your evening meal in Wichita Falls, they have a whole street of the usual chains: Olive Garden, Friday%26#39;s, etc. It%26#39;s a college town. I don%26#39;t know of any outstanding local restaurant, but maybe if you ask in the Wichita Forum you%26#39;ll get a recommendation from someone who knows the area. The last time I was there we ate at a Logan%26#39;s which is a reasonably priced, pretty decent chain steakhouse, and it didn%26#39;t have the extreme wait that some of the others did.

thanks so much for the driving tips...esp to avoid city traffic. It%26#39;s all about escaping that on this trip. :)

    cheers! x
