Good Barbecue

We%26#39;ll be in Austin over the New Year weekend and I%26#39;d like some recommendations for y%26#39;all%26#39;s favorite barbecue...preferably within walking distance (but not necessarily) of the Driskill. thanks!

Good Barbecue

My favorite BBQ is Ironworks. It%26#39;s at 100 Red River. From the Driskill that would be two blocks east and then five blocks south. An easy walk for sure.

It%26#39;s a very casual place. When you walk in, you order at the window, pay the cashier, and then grab a seat. Enjoy!!

By the way, we just ate at the Driskill Grill last weekend for the first time. We did their six course tasting menu paired with wine. All I can say is that it was fantastic!!

I know you didn%26#39;t ask for other suggestions, but if you%26#39;ve never been to Esther%26#39;s Follies but you really should check it out. It%26#39;s a comedy/vaudeville/magic show and you will laugh your butt off. It%26#39;s on Sixth just down from the Driskill.

Good Barbecue

Rudy%26#39;s is not within walking distance, but not too far. It%26#39;s popular here and really casual. The closest one to downtown is the one on Loop 360. Also, if you%26#39;re looking for a longer drive (which I don%26#39;t think you are) a great place is the Salt Lick, in Driftwood, TX (right out of Austin) (don%26#39;t go to the Salt Lick on 360, it%26#39;s not as good) Driftwood is dry county, so you bring your own beer/wine to dinner at Salt Lick. (there are also 2 great wineries(Mandola %26amp; Driftwood Vineyards) in Driftwood you can taste and purchase wine from to take to your dinner at Salt Lick- that is always fun.)

Howdy! Hope you enjoy Austin! I%26#39;d say the best barbecue within walking distance of the Driskill is Iron Works. Not that it%26#39;s the best in Austin, and for that matter it%26#39;s not as good as it was several years ago, but it will give you a good taste of how Texans like their barbecue, and it%26#39;s in a good setting -- an old Iron works (of course!) with red and white table cloths and paper towels subbing for napkins.

Other good barbecue within a short cab ride of the Driskill might include Po-Ke-Jo%26#39;s, on Fifth Street west of Lamar. It%26#39;s a local chain and it%26#39;s a bit pricy for the portions.

A tourist trap kind of place that%26#39;s a little better than its reputation is the County Line. There are two locations -- one on 2222, near Loop 360, and one on Bee Cave Road (or 2244), just past 360. Both are a drive away from the Driskill, maybe 10-15 miles away. Very good service. I like the food, though I don%26#39;t consider the atmosphere authentic. And again, please note how subjective the idea of ';good barbecue'; is in Texas, just like Memphis and Kansas City. One of the posters recommended Rudy%26#39;s, which I don%26#39;t care for. A lot of posters here don%26#39;t like County Line.

Of course, if you have a car and some time, you should take a road trip. Search for barbecue in this forum and you%26#39;ll find a lot of threads about brisket out of town. Good luck!

Pok E Joes on 5th is good
