First time coming to Dallas 11/10 - 11/13

Morning,

I%26#39;m driving down from Chicago for a conference and staying at the Adams Mark Yikes # 67! (yes, I%26#39;ve read the reviews and not too happy about what I%26#39;ve read)

Anyway, I%26#39;m point man for trying to locate some good local food, bars and things to do. Ages from late 30%26#39;s to mid 40%26#39;s both men and women and not more than 4 or 5 of us. Since I have a car, getting around isn%26#39;t an issue.

Granted it%26#39;s a large task but not much on the boards.

Thanks in advance!

Adam%26#39;s Mark is a giant hotel- haven%26#39;t stayed there in years but it isn%26#39;t a bad place, just very ';convention'; oriented. Good news is you are right across from the DART light rail line so you may not have to drive muc- this is good news downtown. Downtown Dallas is an area in transition as far as nightlife goes but don%26#39;t be put off by it- there are places to eat, drink and relax.

I don%26#39;t know when you plan to be there but the the first Thursday of the month, Downtown Dallas has a ';block party';- places open late, see downtowndallas.org. Urban Market is a great place to stock up on snacks, get a bottle of wine, grab a take out or sit for a little bistro meal and live music. Other places that are in that vicinity include Iron Cactus, Ten Sports Grill, Obar and Jeroboam. Neiman Marcus and the Adolphus Hotel are beautiful to visit around the Christmas Holidays.

Late Nights at the Dallas Museum of Art is almost over- last one is November 17 but if you are there, plan to go. They are open until midnight, have special tours and live music. (dallasmuseumofart.org)

Uptown Dallas is an area a little north of downtown with lots to see and do. (uptowndallas.net)

Here%26#39;s a little map that will give you an idea of places that the train can take you plus show how you can connect with the M-line Street Car from Cityplace Station that can get you over to Uptown, lots more restaurants and bars. It shows your hotel and you can take DART up to Mockingbird Station- again restaurants, bars and the Angelika Movie Theatre.

If you come to Texas it%26#39;s a good idea to make sure and visit one of the oldest honky tonks around!

As my brother always says, ';Goodtimes!';

Hanging out in the West Village has a good variety - Taco Diner, Mi Cocina, TomTom, Nikita, Paciugo...lots of good people watching too.

Knox-Henderson is another good area - more on the Henderson side. Cuba Libre, TeiTei, Hibiscus, Old Monk, Fireside Pies, Vickery Park.

West Village is more pretentious and Henderson is more laidback. But y%26#39;know, jeans are accepted everywhere...

Adair%26#39;s needs to get mentioned more often on the Dallas forum- great location!

Thanks everyone!

I%26#39;ve sent this thread link to others and everyone seems comfortable with the responses.

How about Sushi, a good Irish pub or better yet...a locals water hole to play pool,. darts and cocktail all evening?

Snobbish isn%26#39;t the look we%26#39;re going for, relaxed is.

McKinney Ave. has some great ';tavern'; type places. It%26#39;s got a fun atmosphere... lots of financial industry folks doing the happy hour thing. Latin America Tapas, and TABC (Thomas Ave Beverage Co), The MAC (McKinney Ave. Tavern), and Primo%26#39;s are some places on McKinney. I am not sure what kind of weekend crowd they have though.

Irish Type Pubs:

The Old Monk (Henderson), The Blarney Stone (Greenville), and The Dubliner (Greenville) are all bars you may enjoy. Most of these are in the Greenville area.

This is a GREAT website which has spot on descriptions:

dallashappyhour.com/bars/Greenville-bars.htm

I would focus on the Uptown, Henderson or Greenville area.

Sushi:

A few good sushi spots are Blue Fish (Greenville), Tei Tei (Henderson), Teppo (Greenville), Sushi Sapporo (Uptown). If money is no object, Nobu is the way to go. It%26#39;s in the Crescent in Uptown.

If you end up on Henderson (off 75), there are some great places to eat - Hector%26#39;s, Tei Tei and Cuba Libra come to mind off hand.

Hope you have a great time!

If you take the Dart Rail to Mockingbird Station from your hotel (about a two block walk to the station), you will find an Irish Pub and a Sushi bar (plus about 15 other restaurants) all in one place. Both are relaxed. The Angelika Movie theater is also there, showing great indepdent and avant garde films. Walk off the train, up the elevator, and your%26#39;e there.

I would also recommend checking the Old Monk if you are into good pubs. This is on Henderson (take the Knox/Henderson exit on U.S. 75, and turn right - the Old Monk is about 100 yards on the right. You would need a car or take a taxi if there are a bunch of you. Across the street is a Cuban restaurant and , well there are restaurants all around.

One of my favorite places on Henderson which was briefly mentioned is Fireside Pies. No, it isn%26#39;t that kind of pie, but pizza pie! The salads are wonderful and huge, split it, you won%26#39;t be sorry. The patio is really nice and the wait staff are superb. The down side to this place is they take no reservations and it is popular. If you go on Friday or Saturday night (and it%26#39;s only open in the evenings), go fairly early. Get a table outside. Enjoy!

Thanks again everyone...

As the time approaches, my concern will turn towards weather.

Now, I%26#39;ll throw this out there. Any good public golf courses?

Since I don%26#39;t play golf...

...all I can think of is Tennison in East Dallas near Lakewood and Hollywood/Santa Monica neighborhoods.
