Hello Travlers,
I went to Conroe the 28th of Aug. and bought a home in Montgomery on the Lake. I am planning to move from California to Montgomery the first week of October. I thought I would sell everything and just move clothes %26amp; things that I could not live without, pull a trailer behind my Escalade. Since then I have come to my brain check and realized that I can%26#39;t drive without a trailer, let alone with a 9 month old yellow Lab. I have decided to hire a mover and have them bring things to my new home. My question is that I am planning to drive to Montgomery with my dog and i would like to know if anyone has made this trip (California to Texas) and had a pet. What Hotels allow pets so that I can stop and get some shut-eye for a few hours. According to mapquest it is 1589 mile from my home to the front door (apx. 24.58 hours straight thru) I think that I can only drive 600-700 miles a day . I am looking towards 3 days of travel, any suggestions to my route or Hotels to stay? I currently live in Pasadena CA. and according to mapquest , I will be traveling on the 10 East. Does anyone know of a dog park along the way that I can let my dog run off engery? I would appreciate any insight to my new destination!!!!!!! Bakersfield born and accustome to not alot of traffic, (reason for moving after transfering to Los Angeles) I can sleep in my car if I can be directed to a placed that will allow me to sleep in my SUV with my dog.
Looking forward to my new venture, Launi Abbott, California, texas bound.
Moving From California to Conroe!
Look at petswelcome.com for information on travelling with your pet. Obviously make lots of stops for the dog and you!
My husband and I drove from LA one day, stopped at a rest area and slept in the car. We felt safe, as there were lots of RV%26#39;s and 18 wheelers there.
You will take I-10 east to Houston, and then I-45 north towards Dallas, to get to Conroe. If you find yourself getting to Houston in the rush hour (usually 3-7pm) take the Sam Houston Toll Road around to the north, until you get to I-45, then proceed north.
Welcome to Texas!!
Moving From California to Conroe!
Yes...Have made the miserable trip many times! Bakersfield to Houston..We lived in Bakes, and used to come here to Houston often, before moving here..
There is a hotel in Fort Stockton, TX. that allowed pets...I%26#39;ll have to check with my husband on the name..think it was a Holiday Inn, but not positive...
That was usually where we stopped for the night..miserable place, didn%26#39;t stay longer then had to!
Welcome to Texas! I%26#39;m not to far from Conroe..hope you love it here!
thank you for the insight on my drive with my dog. You said that you lived in Bakersfield, How long ago did you leave? Where you in the oil industry? I am hoping that the conroe/montgomery area is going to be like Bakersfield a few years ago. Driving on the 105 reminded me of rosedale Hwy, before the boom to the North West. Sold realestate for 20+years and hoping for the same kind of community like I grew up in. Being single for 22 years I find that my life consist of realestate, Home life ,cooking entertaining and clients become my family. maybe a occasional date with a farmer rancher, good old boy in wranglers and a pick up. leaving soon for the road to texas before Christmas.
Hi Reallauni!
I too moved from California (Ventura County) to Lake Conroe six weeks ago.
It seems that we went through the same though process on moving, trailers and pets. Even though I hired a moving company, I rented a U-Haul trailer and put several dogs in the back of my Denali.
Plan on a 2 - 3 day trip with animals. You will need to stop about every 3 hours at a Rest Area and let your dog stretch on a leash. No, there are no areas with protected dog runs.
Don%26#39;t sleep in your car if you are by yourself, not a good idea. Along the I-10 route there are La Quinta hotels (cheap $75), they allow dogs and even include breakfast (sort of).
Enjoy your new home at the lake. I know that I am!
Thanks for you update on my trip. I have decided not to haul a trailer, or pack the car full. Wondered if I could find a good moving company ?Not alot of things mostly clothes(that most dont fit) TV one bedroom set. (plan on purchasing things in Conroe) I thought I could maybe find a company that is moving some one%26#39;s items to Texas and i could have my things go then, or find a company that will move small loads. Who did you use and where you happy with them?
How are you enjoying Conroe? I understand that Houston had alot rain last week did conroe have flooding too? I am sure you are impressed with the cost of living after Ventura,. My father and his wife are going to relocate as well to Conroe, The California property values have made it impossible to afford a home on a fixed retirement income ( has to be on water) after years of living in Carlsbad. I am surprised how many people tell me that they are moving to Texas or have a family member who has bought a home there. When my son %26amp; I went to vist %26amp; check out the town we were so delighted on how pleasent %26amp; friendly EVERYONE is. I am looking forward to my new home town.
I was born and raised in California and have lived in Conroe since 1980. Hope you enjoy living on the lake!
This will definately be a change for you...
The only big minus is the weather. The fall-spring is great, but our summers are very hot and long. The up side is the weather can be a conversation starter when you meet someone new, as the weather does have much more variety than you experience in CA.
On the plus side, people are very friendly and most things are much less expensive. Also, since the area has grown so much, we now have some great shopping and dining.
Welcome to the Lone Star State!
