III Forks Austin ?

I have been watching the top rated steak houses in the in-flight magazines as I travel for work and III Forks in Dallas has consistently been rated as one of the top steak houses in America (or at least in towns that American Airlines flies to ... haha - Hence, the list being in their magazine).

Anywho... I noticed that a III Forks has been listed in Austin recently and wondered if anyone has tried it yet?

If so.... report...?

thanks

III Forks Austin ?

There was talk of one going in the new Second Street development but as far as I know, it hasn%26#39;t opened yet.

Maybe someone else has more info.

III Forks Austin ?

Howdy! The word is III Forks will be opening this month! Its address is 210 Cesar Chavez, which puts it near or in the AMLI apartment building a block west of Congress. I%26#39;m sure we%26#39;ll hear some reviews soon, but in the meantime, don%26#39;t miss Austin%26#39;s other fine steakhouses! Besides the big chains -- including Ruth%26#39;s Chris, Sullivan%26#39;s, and Trulucks%26#39; -- there%26#39;s the Austin Land and Cattle Company, not to be confused with Texas Land and Cattle Company, which is in a different league. Austin Land and Cattle is a white-tablecloth dress-up restaurant located on North Lamar at 12th, at the very edge of downtown. We also have Dan McCluskey%26#39;s, on Sixth Street, which has a very good local reputation.

III Forks opened last night here in Austin (October 24th). I%26#39;ve heard that it wasn%26#39;t a big gala. As written above, III Forks is going to have a lot of competition with other well known local steakhouses.

I%26#39;m going tonight, so I%26#39;ll try to post back my thoughts.

My wife and I had a 7:30 reservation, and the place was busy.

It%26#39;s entrance is a little unique across from the new City Hall, so there is parking in the garage of the city hall, but you%26#39;ll have 3 or so flights of stairs to go up.

They offer valet for $8. Difficult to find actually, you need to drive off of Cesar Chavez onto Lavaca and get in the right hand lane immediately. Once you know it%26#39;s not too bad, but we circled once before we figured it out.

There is relatively small bar to the right as you enter. Not sure of how many it seats, but I%26#39;d suspect about 100 or so.

Were seated immediately, and attentive waiter. Water and bread brought out immediately. Tasty butter.

Ordered a bottle of 2003 Cakebread, and Lobster Bisque appetizer ($170 and $7 respectively) and Mrs. had the III Forks salad ($7). All three were excellent.

Both had petite filets, mine baseball cut, medium rare. Extra mushrooms, and asked for a side of bearnaise. They brought out hollandaise and had already placed it on the steak. Oh well.

Totals for those were $27, 29, $7 for mushrooms, and they charged me $3 for hollandaise.

Meals came with creamed corn. It was my birthday, so they took a photo of the Mrs and myself and printed it out in the back with a nice ';Happy Birthday'; written on it.

The GM came by, apologized for teh hollandaise incident, and offered two after dinner drinks on the house.

All in all, we were about $263, including the wine.

There are other steakhouses in Austin that are as competitive. It%26#39;s a new place, so there will be little issues, but overall I would say the dinner was extrememly good, yet expensive. Felt like there was a lot of $7 for this, $7 for that.

I am a regular diner at III Forks, Dallas and was anxious to try their new location in Austin. III Forks is not only known for their wonderful menu they are also known for the service and their ability to make everyone feel important. I had wondered if they could pull off such service and be as good as the flagship restaurant. Much to my pleasure Chris Osmond and staff at the Austin location went beyond and have duplicated the Dallas landmark to perfection. They have been open less then one month and I have had the pleasure of being their guest four times. Well worth the trip. The ambiance, the service and cuisine is second to no one in the food industry. Count it as a must visit when in Austin.

ok - take that $170 bottle of wine off the list (previous post) and the meal is not that expensive. My wife and I ate here not that long ago for just under $125.

Shared the scallops (very good) - I had the filet mignon (excellent) and my wife had the peppered steak (fair)

and had a botle of Becker Cab - one of the best local red wines you can get - for $36 or something like that (the mark up on wines in restaurants just makes me laugh).

very good steakhouse
