Visiting Austin: Logistical Questions

I%26#39;m coming to Austin later this week-- wondering a couple of things:

-- Is a car needed? Mostly interested the 6th street music/food/fun scene, but would explore outside of that during the days. Just wondering if we should dump the rental at AUS (probably driving from DFW).

-- Is parking typically difficult/expensive? Basically wondering if holding on to the rental and paying for parking is a bad deal.

-- Looking at staying at the DoubleTree Club-University. Any thoughts on that? Reviews elsewhere on TA are generally positive. Any other options in that area for %26lt;$100/night?

Thanks,

KR

Visiting Austin: Logistical Questions

Parking is very difficult downtown but right now will not be as bad because most of the college students go home for Christmas break...so the city is not as crowded.I would hold on to the car if I were you...but only if you plan to explore other areas which I recommend. Also, try fourth and fifth streets and the little streets in between.

1. ';Esthers Follies'; comedy show,I may have the spelling wrong, the most hilarious show ever. It is on sixth street or a street over...

2. Fado%26#39;s Irish Pub on 4th street for relaxed atmosphere

3. Eddie V%26#39;s- expensive but very good food.

4. The Oasis- restaurant %26amp; bar,you must have a car to get here and make sure you get good directions, overlooks lake travis...go in time to see sunset.

5. Pick up a ';Chronicle'; it will tell you everything going on %26amp; will tell you where to catch live music which Austin is known for.

6. Zilker Park

7. Barton Creek

8. Shady Grove restaurant

If you find the bridge on highway 360 that crosses Lake Austin there is a place you can park on the side of the road and climb up for a great view.

Everyone is extremely friendly in Austin, just ask...
