I am looking for a good, perhaps out of the ordinary, place to travel for a weekend getaway to do some photography. No busy places please. More of a quiet, scenic type of place. Any ideas? Thanks for your responses.
photography ideasBig Bend is excellent for photography. It%26#39;s close to the high season there, but there should be plenty of secluded areas for you. But I know that camping can fill up this time of year.
Palo Duro is also very nice. I know that the winter is fairly desolate there (and cold), but I%26#39;m not sure about now.
Eastern New Mexico is pretty photogenic. There is the string of lakes on the Estacado as well as mesas and desolate ranch land.
And, of course, if you%26#39;ve never been to the area, FM 390 (signed a scenic route) around Brenham is gorgeous.
Hope that helps.
photography ideasI would agree - Big Bend will give you sunsets like you never seen before (at least that was my experience) and a terrain that you cannot match - at least in very few places - in the USA. If you are in to night photography, the clear skies will astound you.
I am assuming you are looking for places near Abilene ? If not, I could give you a list of about 2000 places.
The Texas Hill Country has wonderful scenery - I also found the drive from San Antonio to Big Bend on I-10 to be a bit like Mars, but very unique as well...
I would think driving around the small towns of the Texas Hill Country and of West Texas could provide some very interesting composition for photographs -
You might want/need to take more than a weekend to go to a wildlife refuge. There are lots of them along the coast of Texas and, at the right times of the year, you can see lots of birds, butterflies, and the various plants in bloom. If you look closely everywhere...you will see very tiny wildflowers in bloom at all times of the year. East Texas has the tall pines along with many other trees....and since fall is starting to do its thing....the changing colors will be nice. I like to go to the small towns and check out how the old buildings look. I also like to ride around just to see the old houses. With the weather cooling down it makes it a good time to get out. I enjoy watching the skies change. We are able to sit at the couch or stand out on the front porch to watch the sun rise or set...it is definitely flat here. And because we are so far from the city lights....we see millions of stars. I grew up in Houston...so I am not far from there now...but enjoy where I am now. I tolerate the humidity AND the mosquitoes. Good Luck with your outings. Hope you can post some pics online someday. I always try to have some saved on here for background or screen savers.
Try Lake Fork Area, Its beautiful, country side, lots of fall picture taken opportunity including bass fishing, sunset at the lake, Flowers, Birds( Eagles) etc. Stay in Alba Texas. The place called Lake Fork Resort is cool. there website address is www.lakeforkresort.com
Good Luck, God Bless
For great photo ops STAY OFF THE INTERSTATES! Get a Texas map and wander around small state hwys. and FM roads. My wife %26amp; I have not traveled on an interstate in 30 yrs. It is amazing what you find in small out-of-the-way little towns. Old buildings, interesting people, unique views, ancient churches, and lots of interesting photo layouts. It used to take us about 5 hrs from Dallas to San Antonio on the interstate, however, we have found we can make the trip in about 5 1/2 hrs. with beautiful and interesting scenery on the back roads.
The Brazosport area offers a variety of scenic, quiet photo spots: Surfside Beach, Gulf Coast Bird Observatory, Abner Jackson Plantation site. While visiting the area stay at Valcour Verandas Bed and Breakfast, another scenic, quiet sight complete with large mossy oak trees and plenty of birds. Visit www.valcourverandas.com for more information.
