Visiting Texas

We are visiting our son in Austin in February and would like to extend our visit to Texas a few days longer. We just don%26#39;t know where we should go. We will go overnight to San Antonio and had thought about Dallas after that. But I heard that there is not enough to do in Dallas as a visitor other than the Kennedy Memorial. I thought about Houston but other than the space center, I don%26#39;t know what else there is. It seems as though it would be too cool to enjoy Galveston. Any suggestions. We%26#39;ll have 2 days to spend wherever we go.

Visiting Texas

If you only have two days.. I would just spend it in the Austin/San Antonio area. Take the ';scenic route'; back from San Antonio and stop in Lockhart for excellent BBQ at Black%26#39;s or Kreuz Market - consistently stated as the best BBQ joints in Texas.

Not sure what you are in to - but a drive out to the Texas Hill Country just west of Austin would be nice - there are many vineyards out that way to visit and the scenery is the best in Texas (outside of far-West Texas mountains).

there%26#39;s not much in Houston besides the good restaurants and the Space Center and museums. Same with Dallas.

San Antonio has the riverwalk, Sea World and Alamo

Visiting Texas

Thanks for your quick response. My husband and I like to poke around interesting shops, go through scenic areas, eat at restaurants that are unique to the area, see historical sites - just about anything that we would not find in our own state of Massachusetts. We would like to stay perhaps in B%26amp;B%26#39;s or other small hotels that are not chains (other than right in Austin where we will probably just stay in a hotel close to our son). I like your idea of staying the the Austin/San Antonio vicinity - less stress for us than trying to go too far.

So any ideas would be appreciated.

We just moved from the San Antonio area. You would love to go down to the Riverwalk. In fact, many hotels have rooms right on the riverwalk or in the vicinity. There are many quaint shops and restaurants there. The Alamo is historic. Really, I think it is a must see.

Also, it sounds like you would love a trip or a drive to the Hill Country. Fredericksburg, TX is about as quaint as it gets. It has a strong German flavor - antique shops, Texas specialty stuff, etc.

Bandera, TX is just west of San Antonio and is very cowboy. My brother-in-law stayed about 2-3 nights at a bed and breakfast type ranch there and went horseback riding on the trails of a big park near there. Don%26#39;t recall which one, but if you go to their website you%26#39;ll find several options.

I agree with the others, trying to do San Antonio and Dallas in two days won%26#39;t work.. It%26#39;s a long distance between. If you will be in Austin anyway, do take time to see the Hill Country.. Fredericksburg is a day trip from Austin as is Wimberly.. lots of shopping there around the old town square.. There is a place outside New Braunfels called Gruene Texas.. they have a web site and i can%26#39;t tell you how neat this place is.. lots of small shops to walk thru during the day, one of the best places to eat in texas.. The Gristmill restuarant ... the oldest operating dance hall in Texas is right next door, called Gruene Hall, it%26#39;s kinda a Texas tradition.... and there is this wonderful B%26amp;B called Gruene Mansion Inn ... my husband and i rented a little cabin on the river from them this last February for our anniversary.. .. fireplace and so beautiful.. the morning breakfast is awesome.. go to the Gruene, Texas webside and check it out.. San Antonio Riverwalk is a must also.. at least for one night.. get a hotel on the Riverwalk... see the Alamo right there at the river... you could do both of these in the two days you have as they are less than an hour apart... good luck.. hope you like Texas.. ps I LOVE Boston and Quincy market....have been four times.. ... dh
