Need some info. about Galveston at Texas A &M

My son is a marine biology major and will begin attending the university in December. I will be following him down and getting him set up in his dorm room. I will be needing accomodations at the end of December for two adults and one child. Will I be able to stay close to the university? I know that the marine biology department is located on an island. Is there hotel or condo rental on this island. Also, I have read several postings about ';not walking the beaches at night'; and ';be careful, don%26#39;t stray'; from the strand. As a concerned mother and an overprotective one, where is the safest place for my family to stay and what advice can I give to my 18 year old naive son about the area?

Can%26#39;t help with accomodations...have never been to Galveston, but the Mom in me did want to reassure the Mom in you. :%26gt; Our daughter spent a summer in Galveston doing an internship at university in a dolphin program. She was a junior at A%26amp;M at the time and grew up in a very sheltered suburb of Dallas...but she managed perfectly fine on her own, with nary an incident to report back to us, except for her fantastic experience with the program there. It%26#39;s a terrific, well respected program and school. Congrats to your son and good wishes to his future in marine biology. Our DD married a fellow Aggie who happened to be an anthropologist, and they now live in the desert... and although she misses working in the thrust of her studies, love conquers all. :%26gt;

I live in a town not far from Galveston but i went to school there... it%26#39;s not a huge island and any place you stay, you will not be that far from your son... there are many places along Seawall Blvd, alot of them very expensive.. We have stayed at the Holiday Inn on Seawall three times.. not real fancy, but reasonable and close to everything..If you want something more upscaled, try the San Luis Hotel ...or the Galvez.. this last time, we rented a condo from a place called CasaBling.com. It was a small one bedroom, but great view, clean, securty guards and right on the Seawall.. we had a kitchen with microwave for less than the cost of those hotel rooms.. plus covered parking below.. You might check that out..there are pictures of each unit and you can pick one.. I wouldn%26#39;t worry about your son, the island has crime like all other places, I went to school there and you just learn where to go and when to go.. There is a huge medical/nursing school complex there, so lots and lots of students around. The place is full of tourist most of the time and it%26#39;s very safe until the wee hours.. He will be fine and you will have a great place to go visit for vacations.... check out Gaido%26#39;s Seafood resturant.. best on the island.. while there, you can drive around and pretty much see where you don%26#39;t want to be at night.. and yes, i wouldn%26#39;t go down to the Strand late at night.. nothing open anyway.... but awesome shopping during the day... he will love it here...and i totally understand your fears.. I%26#39;m a mom with teenage sons too.... dh
