San Antonio area

Thinking of taking our motor home with our two teenage sons to San Antonio after Christmas for a week or so to get away. Any advice on activities or things to see or do to keep them busy and happy at that time of year? Thanks

Hmmmm.....that%26#39;s a tough one as ';teenage fun places'; like Fiesta Texas (Six Flags park), Schlitterbahn (best water park in the U.S.) and Seaworld will be closed. Also, the Riverwalk will be drained the first week or so in January. Here%26#39;s a site with links to various things to do: http://www.sapage.com/tourists.htm

You could take them to one of the various caves around here, which is a fun, unique experience for anyone (links on the site above).

There%26#39;s always the IMAX theater downtown for a two hour diversion.....after Christmas is a good time to come here because the crowds are low and the weather is usually pleasant.....but the activities are limited.

What is your New Year%26#39;s Eve celebration like in I think downtown San Antonio? Would we enjoy that? Do you know of anything open on New Years Day?

New Years is basically a big street party as people drink and fill up the Alamo Plaza and Riverwalk all the way to the Tower of Americas,(which would be a fun thing to do on any given day: http://toweroftheamericas.com/ ) i believe they have fireworks at midnight, but i%26#39;ve never stayed that late on new year%26#39;s eve....last year we went downtown for an early dinner on the riverwalk, but we left before the crowds got big. it%26#39;s definitely fun and festive with sidewalk vendors, musicians, etc.

You might want to check out the Texas Hill Country for additional things to do: http://www.hill-country-visitor.com/

For example, you could go horse-back riding in Bandera (30 miles NW of San Antonio).....

Your way of doing New Year%26#39;s Eve sounds more like us. Want the fun not the hassle. What time would you suggest to be in and out of there.

Any restaurants you would recommend?

Do you know anything about the local campgrounds?

don%26#39;t know much about campgrounds. my favorite ';affordable'; restaurant on the Riverwalk is Boudros: http://www.boudros.com/boudros/

See if the menu looks good to you. (there are a few upscale places, but they probably wouldn%26#39;t be fun for a couple of teenagers) You%26#39;ll need to make reservations for New Year%26#39;s eve, and some places (like Boudros) do a river cruise/dinner, where you can eat on the boat as you cruise around - that might be a fun treat for your sons - just call Boudros and ask about that.......i think as long as you are away from downtown by 9pm, you should be ok. last year we watched the news at 10pm and downtown was packed - not my cup of tea.....i guess i%26#39;m getting old. ; - )

If you find anything else that we might like please don%26#39;t hesitate to let me know. Thanks for all your help! lrusz
