Three friends (women) going to Houston for 3 days at the beginning of March. Any suggestions of where we could stay--safe area, some shopping etc. Never been here before. Medium price range. Thanks

The rodeo will be going on at this time, so lots to do. I would suggest the Galleria area for shopping galore and easy access to all areas.

Where To Stay--Beginning of March

What are your primary interests in seeing while you are here? If primarily shopping - The Galleria and Rice Village are both great spots. If you are here to see specific things, let people know on this forum and they can offer you lots of suggestions and hints - the Galleria area is usually fairly central to most things. I would stay in the immediate Galleria area and not at a hotel located along Highway 59 (aka Southwest Freeway) outside of Loop 610. That area outside of Loop 610 has gotten rather unsavory.

The last days of the rodeo are usually in March - not sure if you are into that or not but it is here. Houston Livestock Show %26amp; Rodeo (HLSR).

Thank you for your responses. We are not interested in the rodeo....just a little relaxing and some shopping, cafes etc. I think the most important thing is a safe area. Some hotel recommendations would be appreciated.

Some hotels in the Galleria area include the Westin (2 of them), JW Marriott, Hotel Derek , Hilton Post Oak, Sheraton Suites, Hampton Inn, and Drury Inn, Crowne Plaza on West Loop South.

The Westin is actually located AT the Galleria so you woulnd%26#39;t have to do any walking or driving to get to the shopping.

I can personally vouch for the Hilton Post Oak and the Sheraton Suites mentioned above.

If you can afford the rates, you can%26#39;t beat the Westin inside the Galleria.

Mid-priced: Hilton Garden Inn, Staybridge Suites, Residence Inn. There%26#39;s also a Holiday Inn that%26#39;s a former Courtyard by Marriott that%26#39;s been recently remodeled.

Queston on Reliant Stadium

Coming for the Texas bowl and wondering about seats at Reliant. I can get club level tickets in the corner of the end zone or upper deck at approximately the 30. Will the view be OK in the corner club tickets? Thanks for any feedback.

There are very few ';bad'; seats in Reliant stadium. Given a choice between club seats and upper level seats, the club would win for me anything. The amenities on the club level are a step up from the upper level and field level seats.

Yes, you%26#39;re there to watch the game, but you do need to drink/eat while doing so and you%26#39;ll have a better selection on the club level.

We had cheap seats in Reliant for the first Texans season. Even near the top of the end zone, we had a great view.

Help. Kemah Boardwalk vs Galveston?

My family is going to visit Houston during Christmas time. I found on the internet that Kemah Boardwalk has some rides for kids. I have two kids (6 %26amp; 4). We have a day to spend either at Kema Boardwalk or Galveston. My questions are:

1. Should we go to kema Boardwalk or Galveston? My main criteria is to let my kids have a good time.

2. If we go to Kema Boardwalk, do we need to spend a day there, or just a few hours? I saw its website mentioned ';Christmas Boat Lane Parade.'; Is it worth seeing? What time and where?

I personally believe the Kemah boardwalk is overrated and a tourist trap. It seems to be restaurant (overpriced and only fair) and some ';small'; rides. Don%26#39;t know about the parade, except it%26#39;s alot of boats lit up. I think a 3-4 hours would be it for this place.

Galveston has Moody Gardens (also a tourist trap, but more entertaining), Schlitterbahn (an indoor/outdoor water park) partially open during winter. There is also Seawolf Park, a submarine to explore as well as play areas. Walk along the beaches (weather/temperature permitting) and look for shells.

Kids seem to love Kemah Boardwalk - it is primarily restaurants and a few shops in the surrounding blocks. They can pet and feed the stingrays - lots of the kiddies love that. Some rides and games. You wouldn%26#39;t need an entire day.

Christmas boat parade is a lot of fun but you have missed it. It was the 2nd Sat. of December.

Galveston has Moody Gardens %26amp; year-round Schlitterbahn water park. I would suggest looking them both (Kemah Boardwalk %26amp; Galveston) up on the Internet to see which has the most activities that you think your kids would enjoy. Moody Gardens can sometimes be a lot of walking and some kids get fussy with that. If you are thinking that Galveston is a ';pretty'; seaside city ... it isn%26#39;t. That isn%26#39;t to say that its not nice to visit - just not a picturesque ocean town. Water %26amp; beaches are not pretty to look at - murky brown water with mud colored sand. The historical strand area is nice with tours of the railroad museum and the tall ship Elissa set among historical bldgs. The seawall area is a section that the city has forgotten about and buildings appear old and rundown other than booming new construction going on.

Kemah Boardwalk is a development of Tillman Fertitta whose sole existance is to get you to eat at one of the Landry%26#39;s restaurants that are spaced around the attractions. It is a tourist trap. Two or three hours should do it.

Of course, he%26#39;s also buying up most of Galveston%26#39;s Seawall, so it%26#39;s only a matter of time before Galveston gets Landry-ized.

Unfortunately for the independent shop owners in the surrounding blocks - people assume that the entire area is owned by Landry%26#39;s - it isn%26#39;t - only the actual Kemah Boardwalk. There are some nice small shops in houses located around the area. Some neat little bars, Zone 504, Monkey Bar, and Palapa Bar that are not Landry-owned. T-Bone Tom%26#39;s in the same vicinity - quite popular to dine at with live bands. Claudio%26#39;s piano bar and restaurant and a new wine bar has opened. All of these venues are independent of Landry%26#39;s and unfortunately get an unfair shake when the Kemah Boardwalk is mentioned.

La Trattoria Restaurant

We have tried this restaurant twice over the past several weeks, and while the food is very good, there seems to be a serious problem with wait staff. On our first visit they were a little slow taking our order and when it did come, my order was served several minutes ahead of my dining partner%26#39;s. To their credit, the restaurant offered us a complimentary dessert.

Believing the service was simply the result of someone having a bad day, we didn%26#39;t hesitate to return a few weeks later. This time, though we were greeted cordially when we arrived, we sat in the cold wind in the outside dining area (the inside seats were all taken) along with several other customers at empty tables and watched the wait staff take care of the needs of those inside while we were never even approached for a drink order. Having waited fifteen minutes with no result, we finally left and chose another restaurant.

Due to the obviously good quality of the food, this restaurant has the potential for excellence. However, in our opinion they%26#39;ll never get the good reviews they%26#39;re hoping for unless they first solve the most basic (and most serious) of problems--indifferent and insufficient wait staff.

We saw your post and appreciate the remarks - we do have to address the problems we have experienced with service and the drawback to our dining (outside) area especially since we only have three indoor tables... our space both indoor (kitchen ) and outdoor is a challenge and many customers are unaware that we don%26#39;t take table orders at lunch (counter only) We are planning to move though and hopefully with more staff the service will improve...

Where do visiting baseball teams stay, like the Red Sox?

Planning a trip in April, for opening day, Texas against the Red Sox. Does anyone one in Red Sox nation know where the team stays (or has stayed) when they are in town? Trying to put my boys in position to get an autograph or see some players. Plus, it%26#39;s probably not a bad hotel! Anyone been there, done that?

I would assume they stay somewhere in Arlington, which is great because its got all the big box chain restaurants you could dream of, plus Six Flags Over Texas (the original Six Flags that started them all).

Kids love a day in Arlington.

As for the signatures... I%26#39;ve always found that the Ballpark in Arlington is really accessable for kids a few hours before the games to meet players and get their signatures.

We like to arrive early at the ballpark for autographs, too, but have found the Red Sox players to be the toughest to get.

I think most folks who read/answer the Arlington forum probably do the Dallas forum as well. Six Flags should be open the first weekend in April. I have to agree with the Ballpark strategy as well. When we saw teams at the Wyndham, there were discrete signs posted about not approaching visitng team members for autographs. Hope you enjoy the Ballpark- it is a great place to go for a game. Stay as close as you can- as you can imagine, the traffic totally mad for opening day and/ or weekend.

I think your better option might be to talk to someone at the Ballpark at Arlington and/or find out where the team exits the game every night. Usually, there is a designated location where they leave and players often stop to sign autographs for fans waiting outside. I scored autographs that way when I lived in Houston growing up. Most people don%26#39;t think about it because it is usually after the game.

We are going to be driving up from McAllen, TX on our way back to Montgomery, AL after visiting grandkids and want to spend 2 nights there on our way home. If we stay on the riverwalk, is it far to the Alamo? DH is not interested in shopping, however it is my birthday and want a fun trip. I would also like a great steak house in the downtown area. We just got back from there and the Alamo is right off the river walk. it%26#39;s only a block off of it. Also, we ate at the Lonestar on the riverwlak and the steak and sandwich%26#39;s were great.

Right, the Alamo is right near the Riverwalk. Regarding steakhouses in downtown; you%26#39;ve got the pricey (Morton%26#39;s, the Palm and Ruth%26#39;s Chris), but the best mid-priced steakhouse is Texas Land %26amp; Cattle in the Drury Hotel, it%26#39;s right on the Riverwalk...

We will be in San Antonio one day and night in April. With two kids, 7 and 9, what are the must dos and best restaurants?

If Riverwalk/downtown, go to the Alamo, possibly the IMAX theater if your kids are into that, and Schillo%26#39;s for lunch. My 11 and 10 year olds love those places. Riverboat rides are fun too.
