indie music here in Houston

Ok, I love indie %26amp; alternative music and am trying to figure out where to see indie groups here in the Houston area (as well as who to see!). I%26#39;ve looked on-line and found a great website that lists bands, where to go see them, when upcoming shows are etc:

http://www.spacecityrock.com/

And having the website is great and all, but there are so many bands and places listed that it%26#39;s hard to sift through them... so I%26#39;d really love hearing some recommendations. Anyone know of any great indie groups playing in Houston, and where do you go to see them? I%26#39;ve been to Helios and that%26#39;s a cool little bar.

I%26#39;ll list a few of the bands I like below in case anyone knows of any local bands that play similar type music. I am interested in all types of music, but my favorite groups at the moment are:

- The Libertines (excellent!!!!)

- O.K. Go

- Franz Ferdinand (sort-of mainstream indie I guess, but I love them)

- British Sea Power (fantastic lyrics and great music)

- Arcade Fire (also a big favorite of mine)

- The Futureheads

- Death Cab for Cutie

- The Killers (they are incredible)

- Panic! At the Disco

- Plain White T%26#39;s

- The Raconteurs

- Fall Out Boy

The indie crowd generally hangs out at The Proletariat (Richmond and Montrose). They have one of the best jukeboxes I%26#39;ve ever seen and the live music there is typically very good.

For music, Space Rock City is alright but not always updated. The Houston Press is also very reliable for that. Also, the fliers posted at the Soundwaves on Montrose always provide an insight on good, upcoming shows.

My friend%26#39;s band is playing a show on Nov 18 at The Mink (http://www.themink.org/)

A lot of the best independent music right now is coming out of Austin though, but Houston is close enough that you%26#39;re going to be able to see almost all of them at some point.

Hope that helps some.

colinaz, Thanks for the info. I will have to go to The Proletariat sometime - it seems I%26#39;ve heard of it before but I can%26#39;t remember when.

And thanx for telling me about your friend%26#39;s band playing at the Mink - are they playing on the 18th? No one is listed to play on the Mink website on the 18th (I looked at The Backroom - Upcoming) ?? I see Be Your Own Pet is playing on Nov. 10 at the Mink which is interesting - they%26#39;re a pretty well-known indie group (but maybe they%26#39;re signed now - not sure).

Thanks again! =)

I%26#39;m sure that you already know about KTRU as well. They play some good local stuff occassionally, but are mostly good for good indie stuff.

check out this website for great concerts

Colinaz, Hey - thanx - no I did not know about KTRU. 91.7 FM right? I usually listen to 94.5, but I guess you could say that%26#39;s more main-stream alternative. Anyways, thanx for the tip.

johnv, thanx for the website. I will check it out.

I read in the HoustonPress that Death Cab for Cutie and OK Go are doing a concert together Nov. 30 at the Hobby Center.... Yay!
