On vacation from December 21-28. Ideas for a super vacation

My family and I will be in Houston for eight days December 21-28? Any suggestions for the time that we are there? Want something that would be a vacation to remember.

Where will you be staying (section of town)? Will you have a rental car? What kinds of things do you enjoy? We have great museums, great shopping at the Galleria and Rice Village. Restaurants of every variety, NASA Johnson Space Center..................

We will be near the Galleria area and yes, we will have a rental car. We usually do not go to museums, but I am interested in doing something that I do not usually do. Just so long that it is interesting. I have a daughter who is real interested in history. Good eating places that will not break our pocket. Actually, we are staying in Simonton, but will be going into the area around Galleria.

not sure what historical interest ur daughter would be interested in but in houston u can try :

Bayou Bend - historic home with antiques

Heritage Society Sam Houston Park - in downtown Houston

It is worth a trip to Moody Gardens for a better aquarium (than the downtown one) and a very nice tropical garden. There are also quite a few historical places in Galveston so that would make a nice day trip.

I would also highly recommend a concert or a show (mysteries are great and affordable in Houston) in the art and entertainment district which house quite a few good restaurants.

Good Luck and enjoy !

PS. while in Houston, u have to try Cajun or Creole cuisine, there are a few places in town that wont break ur bank. There is Ragin%26#39; Cajun, Bayou City, Big Woodrow, Cajun Corner, Treebeard%26#39;s (i bought their cookbook which is pretty good), etc.

I really enjoy the Pappadeaux (a bit upmarket but less than the one on Westheimer, better mix of crowd at Richmond too) on Richmond.

There are tons of great restaurants in Houston and they are all quite affordable. If u can list some cuisine, there will be more suggestions.

If u like Chinese, there is a little place that serves really good and cheap chinese food. It is called Chinese Cafe (on Richmond, near Galleria). In the same strip mall, u will find Dimassi Middle Eastern which is also a good choice (they have one in the Village by the University). If not, the Indian restaurant (sorry cant recall it right now) is also a good bet.

If u really like dumplings (chinese), I suggest u go to Dumpling King on westhiemer. It is the best vegetarian (they have all sorts) dumplings hand made by chinese chefs. Really cheap and good and they do have other dishes u can order for lunch specials.

If u want to experience other asian cuisine I suggest u take a drive to Bellaire%26#39;s Chinatown. Highly recommended is Tan Tan (a mixture of chinese and south east asian dishes, one of the best and most extensive menu in town), Thai Fast food (quite a find and mostly asians, buffet style restaurant, u can get a lunch box for $5 or order a la carte, really authentic Thai as compare to others in town that caters more to Americans), Peking Cuisine Restaurant (if u like duck, this is your place ! u got to order in advance coz they sell out quickly and are only made to order for patrons who orders, really good sauteed green beans among other good dishes).

Sorry, I can go on and on about food in Houston.

Good Luck

Thank you for all the advise! Will try to go to some of the places you mentioned.
