Traveling from austin to dallas

Was wondering if there is a scenic route from austin to dallas, if not are there any places that are worth stopping. I hear the drive from austin to dallas is quite boring. Interests wine tasting, sports, museums, hiking etc etc. Thanks for the help

Traveling from austin to dallas

The only time Austin to Dallas is a scenic route is in the spring when the wildflowers are everywhere. It%26#39;s only a three-four hour drive, though, so it%26#39;s not like taking a long drive and stopping along the way. I%26#39;ve never stopped anywhere en route.

Traveling from austin to dallas

Given a choice and the time, I would cut over to 281 via 71, stop in Marble Falls for some eats, maybe Blue Bonnet Cafe or Russells Station. Go to Longhorn Cavern State Park. Stop at Eve%26#39;s Cafe in Lampasas, sit in the park by the springs. Keep driving up 281 through Hamilton (nice old town) and Hico (gotta love their team mascot- the Hippos!), enjoying being right on the edge of west Texas. Would cut over to Granbury, stay at a B%26amp;B for the night and maybe drop over to Dinosaur Valley State Park for some hiking. Then, if I must, on to Dallas.

The straight shot from Austin to Dallas (or Dallas to Austin per your other post) up I-35 is not in the least scenic and the traffic can be maddening sometimes. That said, you can find a few places along the way worth stopping if you don%26#39;t anticipate finding Napa Valley or Sonoma. Salado, just north of Austin is full of little shops and small restaurants that can be fun and interesting to explore. As you go through Temple, there is the Railroad Museum. A good restauranat downtown is Cheeves Brothers or Clem Mikeskas BBQ right off the highway on 57th. Waco has the Dr. Pepper Museum and the Texas Rangers Museum and the Texas Sports Hall of Fame plus somoe historic homes. Good place to stop to eat there is the Elite Circle Grille on the traffic circle, exit 333A. As you head north of Waco, West is a great little Czech town. Lots of folks just stop on the highway for kolaches but downtown has some other great bakeries and eateries and little shops. Abbott, home of Willie Nelson, is also home of the Turkey Shop Smokin Cafe, some terrific turkey eating there. Hillsboro has the big outlet malls (if you are into that ) but the downtown square and courthouse are also nice. Lake Whitney is very close for fishing and camping. Wxahachie is the next town up, right before you get to Dallas- another beautiful courthouse with little shops. This just barely scratches the ';I-35 corridor'; surface.

WHATEVER route you take, explore and enjoy all of the aspects that are Texas- it%26#39;s a whole %26#39;nother country!

Another palce to check out near Glen Rose is the Fossil RIm Wildlife Center. There are wineries near Granbury, Barking ROcks and Bluffdale are a couple, haven%26#39;t been there but might be worth checking out.

Hi everyone thanks for the replies yes you are all correct the drive really stunk, in fact it stunk twice. Our original plan was to get off of the plane that landed in austin although it was going to dallas. Stay in austin a few days then drive to dallas for the cowboys game. Well let me give you guys a laugh. The airline wanted to charge us $200 dollars each to get off of the plane in austin, they did not tell us that when we booked the flight. Low and behold we chose not to pay the $$$$ so we ended up landing in austin waving to our hotel then took off for dallas. arrrived in dallas at 9:00 pm and drove to austin to our hotel. I guess the good thing was is that it was dark so we just imagined there were things out there. So on saturday we drove back to dallas because the cowboys game was on sunday. We left at 8pm arrived at 11 pm. yes we were pissed about the whole situation but the game made up for all of it.

Check out Texas Outside, they have have some ideas for you - Glen Rose is a nice stopping point. The back roads are much better than 35
