Hello! Going on a business trip to San Antonio and then heading to our office in Round Rock for one day, two nights. Should be arriving around 5pm or so the first night and then out the next night closer to 4pm (staying near the airport that night). I love to watch birds, enjoy a good punk rock show and love exploring new areas. I%26#39;m tight on time and want to cram in some stuff in the evenings. What time does it get dark in Austin (traveling next week)? Any areas I should definitely check out that have a good indie vibe? Any good lakes or outdoor areas that have good birding spots? Also looking for good vegetarian chow.
Thanks for your help, if you ever go to Charlotte, DC or Baltimore will be glad to answer any of your questions :)
Evenings in Austin- 2 nightsHowdy! Welcome to Austin and San Antonio. Sounds like you have wheels so my suggestion is stay downtown and check out the 6th Street area for some punk rock. Sorry, I don%26#39;t know as much about punk as about classical, but you should get some other responses soon enough! It%26#39;s probably too late to see many birds at night, other than the many grackles looking forward to wrecking the paint on your rental car. Austin%26#39;s getting dark -- DARK -- about 6:15 or so these days. Also we are getting our first Arctic front tonight, so it will be chilly next week.
If you have some daytime available after your visit to Round Rock, and you don%26#39;t mind the drive (and the traffic), go all the way south on MoPac Highway (the signs say Loop 1, but we all call it Mopac because it parallels the train) and check out the Lady Bird Wildflower Center. I don%26#39;t know whether it will have many exhibits at this time of year, though.
Other than that, for other ';indie vibe'; parts of central Austin, cruise down South Congress (or SoCo, as we cal it) for nice restaurants and unique Austiny shops, or South Lamar for standalone iconic music venues like the Broken Spoke, the Saxon Pub, and the Horseshoe Lounge. While you%26#39;re down there, look for Mr. Natural, Austin%26#39;s foremost Mexican vegetarian health food restaurant and store! Good luck.
