I am interested in finding out what type of campus the University is. I have heard nothing but great things about the school, but is the campus a city school, or are are there a lot of trees, grass, etc? I am looking at pictures on the school%26#39;s web site and it appears all concrete (http://www.utexas.edu/maps/).
Does the school have a main avenue area that most students hang out at (bars, clubs, restaurants), or do they mostly drive to spots? I know the school is real big so there must be a lot of students that live on campus, but is it mostly a commuter school (i.e. - most students live off campus?
Univ of TX campus questions
i%26#39;m a UT alumnus. Hook%26#39;em Horns! the campus is gorgeous - wonderful architecture with the buildings, and there are many huge oak trees everywhere with grass lawns and gardens hidden between buildings. there are many dorms on campus, and for the most part freshmen live ';on campus';. there are many apartments and houses within a few blocks of campus to live, and probably the majority of students live ';off'; campus close to a bus route, which is what i did. the buses are plentiful and efficient from what i remember. there%26#39;s the Drag (Guadalupe Street) where students go during the day, but UT is basically in the center of Austin, so the campus is a few blocks away from tons of clubs, bars, restaurants, etc., where you can walk or take a very short drive. hope this helps. Go Horns!
Univ of TX campus questions
Thanks TexasHam: If a student lives on campus, can you get by without having a car?
Howdy Mario! Yes, Texas has a large campus with trees and large expanses of open space. There are two places very close to campus where students traditionally walk to eat or hang out. They are the Student Union, actually on campus, along side Guadalupe or ';The Drag';, on the western border of campus; and Dobie Mall, a private dormitory whose two lowest floors is a mini mall with a large food court (and a small movie theater). Besides that, there are more food places on the Drag and on Martin Luther King, a short walk from campus.
In general, I think students can get by without vehicles. Most students who don%26#39;t live on campus either live in private dormitories right next to campus, including Dobie, Castilian, and Goodall-Wooten; live in West Campus or Hyde Park, directly west or north of campus, respectively; or live in various parts of town that are served reliably by UT shuttles, which run frequently during the day. Most of these routes are very close to UT; the one exception might be the Far West region. UT students have free access to city buses, as well.
I%26#39;m also a Texas Ex. Most students live either on campus or a few blocks away in either West or North Campus areas. There are also the Far West and Riverside areas which are on bus shuttles. The closest bar to campus is Cain and Abels located on 24th street. Also 6th street is a cab ride away and is a blast. Just get out of your cab and wonder from bar to bar.
The University of Texas campus is beautiful with ton%26#39;s of trees, fountains, statues and interesting architecture. It also has some of the best university museums in the country. The campus area is bustling most hours of the day and there%26#39;s an endless supply of entertainment just a short bus ride (or long walk) away in downtown Austin. These pictures may give you a better view of the campus:
