Hello, I live in Austin, but have family coming in town from Michigan and Georgia for Christmas. We live in South Austin and they want to take an overnight trip down to San Antonio and stay on the Riverwalk for one night. I haven%26#39;t been in years, and don%26#39;t remember it much.....any suggestions for fun things to do with them? Anything, from restaurants, shops, clubs/bars.
Thanks
What to do on Riverwalk at Christmas Time
the Riverwalk will be decorated and festive during Christmas-time. you can always do a river ride: http://www.riosanantonio.com/
one of my favorite restaurants on the Riverwalk is Boudros: http://www.boudros.com/boudros/
i suggest shopping at La Villita: http://lavillita.com/
here%26#39;s another site that might be helpful: http://thesanantonioriverwalk.com/
there are plenty of other restaurants on the riverwalk, and most are ';ok';....just please avoid Casa Rio and the Original Mexican Restaurant as they are not good. there%26#39;s also plenty of bars to keep your drink on.....Mad Dogs for beer, Swig for coctails, Pat O%26#39;Briens %26amp; many more....just walk around and see what looks fun to you. there%26#39;s always the Alamo, which is good for about 30 minutes to see a little history.....close by is the IMAX theater if you want to see something like that. hope this helps....

Riverwalk is a nice place around the holiday%26#39;s
Lights make for a nice atmosphere.
There%26#39;s also a parade to kick off the season right after Thanksgiving.
Don%26#39;t forget to go to El Mercado.. Market Square.. you%26#39;ll see the ads in your hotel ... there are trolley%26#39;s that go back and forth during the day from the RIverwalk areas.. it%26#39;s just blocks from the Riverwalk, it%26#39;s very festive, full of enclosed shops, restuarants and there%26#39;s always some kind of free street entertainment there.. great for families and all ages...we wouldn%26#39;t go to SA and not go there ... dh
Be sure to have breakfast at the Guenther House. It is at the foot of the Pioneer Flour Company. The food is excellent. You can catch a trolley there too.
Born and raised in S.A., I take my kids on a downtown day every year before school starts so they can appreciate what people from all over the country travel to see. I agree with the tips on which mexican food restaurants to avoid on the Riverwalk! But the lights are beautiful at Christmas so it%26#39;s definitely worth a stroll or a barge ride. The Guenther House is a great place for breakfast or lunch when you can likely sit outside and enjoy the view of the river. For a really nice dinner, try Pesca at the Watermark. The Alamo is a wonderful experience but I%26#39;d avoid the generic touristy places across the plaza. If you have time, the new 4D movie at the Tower of the Americas is great and accessible by trolley. Then you can take the trolley to Aldaco%26#39;s in Sunset Station for lunch. The mercado is great for northerners to feel like they%26#39;ve made it to Mexico for shopping. Have fun!
FIrst of all if you are going down there to stay the night, even just one, at xmas time...good luck if you havent reserved a room by now.The lights are very popular this time of the year. Has anyone eaten at the MAD HATTERS for brunch?
