We will be in a Galvaston for 2 weeks in early Feb.Any ideas on what to do, best golfing places, where to go, and where to eat, esp seafood.

All info greatly appreciated.

Two weeks is a long time to spend in Galveston. I would consider at least some time in Houston or other nearby area.

Galveston.com has lots of information on attractions and calender of events. But some things to see while in Galveston would be Bishop%26#39;s Palace, the Strand for shopping, Seawolf Park for a submarine visit, Moody Gardens if you are with kids.

Another cruiser question! Coming in to town on the am of 1/20 . 4 of us!Where should we eat? What should we not miss? Music and/or entertainment in the evening! Breakfast in the am? Thanks for any advice!

Head they serve a great breakfast at The Orignal Mexican Cafe (haven%26#39;t had breakfast there myself - just was highly recommended for breakfast).

Hotel/condo/restaurants

My husband and I are going to be going to SPI the first part of February. I%26#39;ve been looking at hotel reviews, and also considering renting a condo.. We would like to be close (walking distance) to restaurants and bars, and I can%26#39;t tell by the maps where on the island we should be looking for accommodations. Beachview would be GREAT, but isn%26#39;t absolutely necessary.

We%26#39;re pretty laid back, and would like to enjoy some oysters, some seafood, and a cocktail

Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

Read a post back about restaurants, the highlights are mentioned there. How long do you plan on staying on SPI? In my opinion, I think a condo is the way to go. There are many that are beach side. Some rent through agencies and others have an onsite office. It depends on how much $$ you want to spend, although winter rates (lower) will apply for when you will be there. I prefer the southern end of the island (closer to the causeway) to stay. Will you have a car? The island is long, but there is a bus that travels up and down the island that can drop you off places, and it is free, I think.

Thanks for your post - We%26#39;re staying only 5 nights, and plan to have a car. I%26#39;m having a difficult time finding a condo that%26#39;s available - I have found one - at Fiesta Sol, on Amberjack street. It%26#39;s not on the Ocean, but it looks like it couldn%26#39;t be too far.. Do you know the area?

It is ';winter Texan'; season, so a lot of places are booked, but I am sure there is still plenty available. The location of that Fiesta Sol is good, but the place looks somewhat worn. Check out dancercondorentals.com and see if they have anything available. This is a new facility and looks nice from the outside. It is not on the beach, but close. Also look at bridgepointresort.com (upper end $), but I am pretty sure they still have units available, and the desk people can probably recommend something for you if they are full or out of your price range. See about Saida, too. Another idea, go to spionline.com and follow the accomodations link, read through the page and look at ';super duper lodging classifieds'; where people have their own condos listed...one just became available on the 7th that looks great. Hello, my husband and I are arriving at IAH at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday February 1rst. and have to be at Hobby at least at 5:30 p.m. for check in.

Also we will be arriving Hobby on February 5 (Monday) at 6:45 p.m. and have to be on IAH at least at 8:30.

We are looking for the best choice since we are in a budget. And also, we have to consider the time it takes for claiming luggage.

Can anybody help us?

I would suggest looking at a car service, like limo or sedan service. They could meet you a baggage claim and drop you off at the airport ticket/check-in area.

A taxi is the only other way, and neither will be cheap.

You%26#39;re probably thinking of the Texas Folklife Festival thta is held on the grounds of the Institute of Texan Cultures in Hemisfair Plaza. The dates this year are June 8-10. The Festival celebrates the contributions in food, music, dance, and crafts of immigrants to Texas from more than 40 nationalities/ethnic groups. I%26#39;ve heard that this festival served asthe model for the National Folklife Festival held on the Mall in Washington.

SARider is right on! It%26#39;s a great festival - not too crowded, but big enough to make it interesting. Weather can be hot (not as hot as it usually gets in August when it used to be held) so be prepared.

Rental car companies in Houston are Hertz.car, alamo.com, nationalrentacar.com, budget.com, avis.com, enterprise.com, thrifty.com, among others.

When inputing a rate quote, taxes will be shown and then options to chose extra. Decline the insurance, if your personal insurance or credit card offers it. Most US card companies include this on policies but you%26#39;ll need to check for your coverage. Just decline all other charges, especially the gas one, and it%26#39;ll give you a very close estimate of total charges.

Car Hire

Consider whether or not you want the unlimited mileage rate. I%26#39;m not sure why you%26#39;re coming (i.e. business trip where you%26#39;ll be in a conference room all day or pleasure trip where you%26#39;ll be driving around trying different restaurants) but one can put a suprising amount of miles on a vehicle in Houston. I think it costs more, but it%26#39;s cheaper in the long run than if you go over your milege, and adds flexibility to your trip. :-)

I know you said you want to pickup in downtown Houston but pickup at the airport (Bush) is very convenient to All major car rental companies and might be good transportation to and from downtown. (Parking might be an issue, not sure.)

Yes, we are staying in Houston for 5 nights and I don%26#39;t think we need a car as we are going to a wedding and I think we will be busy with that for 3/4 days. However we plan to leave Houston and go to San Antonio, Austin and Galveston for about 10 days. We could rent a car on arrival at the airport but we would probably just leave it parked for the first few days in the Houston Hotel. Also I note parking at hotels can be expensive. The Hotel Emily Morgan where we are staying in S.A. is $20 a day!! Really appreciate all the advice given, many thanks, hello from Dublin Ireland.

Oh... not to be negative, but don%26#39;t rule out needing a car just to go to a wedding in Houston! I%26#39;ve been to many weddings in Houston. :-)

The rehearsal dinner will be in one place (need a car to get there), the wedding will be in another place (need a car to get there) and then the reception will be in another place. Please, please check with the bride/groom/parents thereof before saying you won%26#39;t need a car in Houston. There may be a shuttle provided as part of the wedding, but most often there%26#39;s not.

Honestly... it%26#39;s a huge city. I%26#39;m not sure where you are staying, but if you have any needs whatsoever (tie got soup spilled on it, ran out of contact solution, starving for barbecue) you will need a car.

Ewwww, that%26#39;s horrible. There%26#39;s no best way I%26#39;m aware of unless you have a really good friend to chauffer you. It%26#39;s almost worth renting a car with no drop-off fee to go from oneairport to the other. Road signage is good.

Taxi will probably cost you $75 each way. There are several shuttle services close to the baggage claim areas at each airport. If you google %26lt;hobby airport shuttle IAH%26gt; you%26#39;ll probably get the info you need. A shuttle is minimum $28 each, one way. Budget 2 hours or so for a 1-way trip that time of day. If you book well ahwead of time, you%26#39;ll have a better chance of not waiting to long for the shuttle. Not fun.
