driving austin to dallas

Hi I was wondering if there was a scenic route or any nice places to stop along the way from austin to dallas. Museums, caverns, really good restaurants etc... Thanks so much.

The only route I%26#39;ve driven from Austin to Dallas is IH35, and it%26#39;s a three-hour white-knuckle ride, but there are a few stops you can make. I know folks who make the stop for kolaches in West, and you could drop by Innerspace Caverns. I don%26#39;t know much other than that. My plan is usually to get to Dallas and off IH35 as fast as possible.

If someone suggests an alternate route, even if it%26#39;s through hell, I%26#39;d suggest you take it.

I agree I-35 isn%26#39;t that great. But kolaches in West are a must. I can%26#39;t remember where we got ours before, there are a couple bakeries. But if you just pull off I-35 at West and go down Main St, you can easily find one-- here is a link to one-- http://www.czechstop.net/home.asp

Also, I went to school in Waco (Baylor) so if you do take I-35, you can always stop in Waco at any of these places if they interest you:

-Dr. Pepper Museum (downtown Waco)

- Cameron Park is really nice %26amp; easy to find (http://www.wacocvb.com/waco-cameron-park.html)

-Branch Davidian cult compoud (it%26#39;s pretty far out in the country though.... and it%26#39;s really not that interesting)

-If you want to stop and get a good coffe or tea-- Common Grounds Coffee shop on 8th street (on the side of Baylor) close to 35

- And of course, Baylor U. you will see it off I-35

- Cricket%26#39;s Grill %26amp; Drafthouse (downtown)- good place to stop for lunch %26amp; beer. (http://www.cricketsgrill.com/)

Overall, I wouldn%26#39;t say I-35 is a very %26#39;scenic%26#39; drive....and I don%26#39;t know of another way to get from austin to dallas. I wouldn%26#39;t usually consider it to be a scenic drive.

Howdy! Well, %26#39;bout the only thing to see on IH-35 %26#39;tween Dallas and Austin are road signs and gas stations, but there are a few places not far from the shoulder that are worth stopping for. I%26#39;ve never been to the Dr. Pepper museum in Waco, but it%26#39;s on my list of lifetime things to see. They recently had a collection of antique soda bottles; hope it%26#39;s still there!

Folks have already mentioned the Kolache shops in West, Texas, where many Czechs settled after moving to the new world in the 19th and 20th centuries. (Texas has some more central European descendants further south, in towns like Fredericksburg, New Braunfels, Scherz, Luckenbach, etc. but West is one of the northernmost places they%26#39;ve taken up roots.) One of the more famous shops is the Czech Stop, where you can gas up, fill up with some kolaches, and restock your polka CD collection at the same time. Besides kolaches, there%26#39;s plenty of Czech candies and t-shirts. There are other places in town that are supposed to be even better, though I%26#39;ve never been to them. But there%26#39;s a great cross-section of folk stopping at the Stop, which is busy 24/7 and still very clean and inviting.

But now here%26#39;s a place that folks haven%26#39;t mentioned yet, and that%26#39;s the Abbott, TX Turkey Shop Smokin%26#39; Cafe! Maybe that%26#39;s because it closed for a coupla years after the owners retired, but it%26#39;s been sold (to their next-door neighbors) and now they%26#39;re back at full steam, smoking 70 to 90 turkeys a week, plus chicken, brisket, ham, and ribs. There%26#39;s a short cafeteria line with vegetables, plus homemade desserts. The original %26#39;60s era sign looks straight out of an off-strip guide to Vegas. Look for the Turkey Shop on the east side of the highway near Abbott, about 22 miles north of Waco (and very close to West).

Bon appetit, y%26#39;all.

Actually, 1nxjeff also posted in the Dallas forum and I answered there several days ago. We had lots of the same suggestions!

Woo-hoo! Not only did Poodleone mention the Turkey Shop, he recommended Blue Bonnet Cafe in Marble Falls! Now there%26#39;s somebody who%26#39;s been around central Texas!

Hi everyone thanks for the replies yes you are all correct the drive really stunk, in fact it stunk twice. Our original plan was to get off of the plane that landed in austin although it was going to dallas. Stay in austin a few days then drive to dallas for the cowboys game. Well let me give you guys a laugh. The airline wanted to charge us $200 dollars each to get off of the plane in austin, they did not tell us that when we booked the flight. Low and behold we chose not to pay the $$$$ so we ended up landing in austin waving to our hotel then took off for dallas. arrrived in dallas at 9:00 pm and drove to austin to our hotel. I guess the good thing was is that it was dark so we just imagined there were things out there. So on saturday we drove back to dallas because the cowboys game was on sunday. We left at 8pm arrived at 11 pm. yes we were pissed about the whole situation but the game made up for all of it.
