HOTELS: from Houston to Carlsbad Caverns

hi: We are driving form Houston to Carlsbad Cavern and won%26#39;t be able to do it in one day.

We will need to stop after about 7 or 8 hours of driving. Please help us plan the best route and stopping point.

Also let us know if you think we will need to book (dec 27th) or should rooms be easy around there/that time of year.

Thanks kindly.

HOTELS: from Houston to Carlsbad Caverns

When Stopping in Fort Stockton, I usually stay at La Quinta. I (almost) always book motel rooms ahead of time rates are (almost) always better.

thanks octoboy-

Will probably book that, but need to figure out timing...can you help?

We are thinking of leaving Houston around 9 or 10 am and stopping for lunch somewhere.

Do you think it matters much ( driving time and ease) whether we take a stop in Austin or Fredericksburg versus San Antonio?

Any lunch spots you rate highly that will be easy to get to from the hwy/interstate? We are big fans of roasted or bar b q meats and/or tex-mex.

Also, do you think we%26#39;d be in Stockton around 8pm, given rest stops, one lunch stop, etc? Any decent places for food near the La Quinta? (Simple but not fast food, if possible.)

Cheers!

P.S.: I hope i can help out all the Southwest/West advisors some day with my own ';expertise';. (London, New Zealand, currently Cali) You have all been terrific!

I would think I-10 is better traffic wise than getting through Austin, but I%26#39;ve never gone through Austin so I don%26#39;t know for sure. Cooper%26#39;s Bar-B-Que in Llano right on the Interstate is great (but it%26#39;s about 100 miles from SA. Rudy%26#39;s Bar-B-Q just north of SA is very good. SA to Fort Stockton is about 300 miles 4+ hours with out stops (speed limit’s 80 past Kerrville) add 3 hours (? depending where you are) from Houston to SA. That’s 7 without the stops. It’s been over a year since I stayed in Fort Stockton, and I can’t remember where we ate there.

thanks! we will stop at cooper%26#39;s bbq!

you%26#39;ve been a big help. Now, I%26#39;m sure we can make it to ft. stockton so i%26#39;ll go ahead and book.

cheers!
