Will be staying in Port A for the month of Jan. Any local advice (where to eat, shop - things to do) would be appreciated. Do have a bit of info from the net but am looking for the do%26#39;s %26amp; don%26#39;ts of the place. Thanks!!
Visiting for month of JanThere are really good restaurants - LaPlaya, Seafood %26amp; Spaghetti Works, and Fins are our favorites; lunch is always priced better than supper. Shopping is mostly of the gift or souvenir variety - unless you are looking for upscale beach decor. But be sure to check out Gratitude for fun shopping. And then there%26#39;s always fishing! Check out the birding center and Whooping Crane tours. The community pool is heated for year-round swimming.
My best advice is to pick up the South Jetty newspaper or get it online for communty events that welcome everyone - very friendly town.
Visiting for month of JanHere are a few more thoughts...
Fresh fish is available at Port A seafood (on 361, the main road) ..we have found cooking our own a lot cheaper and often better than the restaurants. Fresh shrimp can be bought off the boats from around 10am to 2pm- just go to the marina by the ferry and look for the boats selling them - great prices.
Breakfast at Cotter Street Coffee House is great (on cotter str) and if nice you can sit outside. Beach street also has breakfast (used to be Beemans) and is also good.
Lunch - Fins is our favorite. We like Moby Dicks too (excellent coconut shrimp). Hooks is fun too, but mostly outside dining.
Sushi - check out Beulahs - sit at the sushi bar and say Hi to David - ...also a nice place for dinner but pricey and worth it.
check out the local theatre for plays - PACT - they have a nice new bldg and price is reasonable. Actors are local and love visitors.
There are several nice art galleries and the local Art Center is fun to go and check out (on main road too).
Dont forget to ride the trolley around - takes you just about everywhere for 25cents and will pick you up on any part of its journey (map in tourist guide) and get you back as well.
you can find alot of info/action in the local paper and the free Tourist Guide available everywhere! enjoy !
