Lowest cost Hobby to IAH?

During the rush hour, PM, I need to get to IAH from Hobby. What is the lowest cost option and going downtown on the bus won%26#39;t work as we will have two bags + carry ons.each. Thanks.

Single female in town for a couple of days. Don%26#39;t want to be in a remote place where I can walk around out of the hotel. Price is not a concern. Please help?

My wife works in the Medical Center area, and I wouldn%26#39;t want her walking around there after dark. Also, there isn%26#39;t much to do down there unless you%26#39;re at one of the hospitals for treatment, frankly.

Downtown would be okay, the Galleria area would be ideal.

Don%26#39;t stay in Reliant area - Med Center -- okay if you oare there to visit one of the hospitals, centers, etc.

Downtown - is good if you stay in the main restaurant/club area. Hotels in that area (where is it okay to walk around at night) are The Magnolia and Hotel Icon. Because you mentioned specific areas - am assuming you need to be in the Reliant or Med Center area during your trip here. When you stay downtown you can take light rail to reach either of these areas.

Definitely Downtown over Med Center but like the other person suggested, Galleria is ideal like the Hilton Post Oak or the Westin Oaks or Westin Galleria.

I%26#39;ve had the honor of staying in all three areas. Definitely the downtown area. Try to catch a play at the Alley Theatre or go to the Opera. The Galleria area is fine and the hotels mentioned are great, but after you%26#39;ve hung out at the Galleria, there%26#39;s not much to do. There is definitely more variety downtown.

As someone else mentioned, the only reason to stay in the Medical area is if you have business there.

Can I walk from the DFW Airport Marriott South (4151 Centreport Boulevard) to the American Airlines Training and Conference Center (4501 Highway 360 S.)? Don%26#39;t mind the distance but looking at Google Maps can%26#39;t tell if it%26#39;s doable - should I just take a taxi?

I would not recommend walking. That%26#39;s a very busy commuter area, especially 360 and there are no sidewalks or other accomodations for walking.

Check with the hotel as they may have a van that takes passengers within a certain radius. If they do this, then they usually have a call system when you need your return ride.

We have been told to book a reasonable hotel and then call 24 hours before arrival to a nicer hotel, they recommended Emily Morgan or Menger and get a great last minute rate. Is this a common practice in the area? I%26#39;m willing to try it but my DH isn%26#39;t too keen.

I just want to be downwtown in riverwalk area. I don%26#39;t want to pay over 150 per night and would like free parking and free breakfast to boot. We will be there for 2 nights Sun and Mon.

I think that%26#39;s a good tactic for any area. I just checked Hotwire for tonight - $92 for a 4-star on the Riverwalk. I don%26#39;t know of any downtown hotel that offers free parking, most are in the $20 range. Free breakfast, free internet, and pretty much anything else free usually doesn%26#39;t exist at a 4-star downtown hotel. Still, for a nice treat, a 4-star at less than a hundred bucks is great!

Thanksfor the reply. I%26#39;m not much of a gambler, but I may be willing to try it. I was told just to call the hotel direct, not go through internet, although we will have internet access at our daughter%26#39;s house in McAllen.

Some hotels have a pre-cruise packages. Enterprise rental car also has some one-way type rentals from Hobby to Galveston for cruise people. Otherwise, a shuttle is like $50 round-trip. You might look at galveston.com for more information. Also, do a search on this site, from the galveston forum page, on cruises as there have been alot of similar questions.

Thanks for your soda advice on my post!

My husband and I are travelling this coming week end. We found that renting a car one way was much cheaper and provided the freedom we like to shop. Okay, I shop, he lets me.

We are staying at the Marriott that is close to the hobby airport. There are tons of hotels around there and we found it was less expensive than Galveston.

The hotel we are at has the Baybrook Mall about 9 miles away (thanks mapquest) and I am guessing the stores you would like would be there. If you had a car it would be fast and easy.

I also found out - too late- that if you are coming in at the hobby airport many hotels close by have free pickup. I cannot remember which one, but one I saw had a shuttle to the port as well. Not free, but reasonable.

I think that NCL cruises out of Houston - not Galveston, you better check on that, don%26#39;t want to miss the boat!

Dallas to Amarillo

About how many hours would it take to drive from Dallas to Amarillo?

We will be driving from Houston so we will need to stop for a night somewhere en route to Amarillo. Any ideas on good but moderate accomodations?

About how many more hours from Amarillo to Santa Fe? any scenic routes I should take?

Dallas to Amarillo

I would use Mapquest to get general mileage and directions. I always add an hour (at least) to the Mapquest driving time estimates. They go by mileage, not traffic.

That said, if you type in Dallas to Amarillo, they have you going through Dallas (their estimate is 6 hours, 360 miles) and over on the Airport Freeway (183), cutting up 114 to 287. If you want to stop for the night in the Dallas/FW area, staying in Grapevine might be a good idea- there are lots of chain type hotels up that way. I would try to avoid this route during rush hour- shoot for noon on a weekday.

Mapquest lists Amarillo to Santa Fe as about 280 miles, a little over 4 hours.

Dallas to Amarillo

I%26#39;ve done Houston to Amarillo a couple of times and it%26#39;s BO-RING. Definitely stay in the DFW area, if not drive all the way through, because your only other choice is Wichita Falls or Childress.

Amarillo to Santa Fe is about 4 hours, IIRC. Even if the mapping sites say otherwise, take I-40 to US 84 to I-25 South. Going Albuquerque takes a lot longer.

If you really want a scenic route, there%26#39;s what%26#39;s called the ';Turquoise Trail'; which runs through Cerrillos and the artist community of Madrid. It%26#39;s mostly NM State Highway 14. To get there from I-40, you can either take NM 344 north from Edgewood, or stay on I-40 and go to NM 14, which will also take you up near Sandia Peak (DEFINITELY worth it).

We drove from Amarillo to Sante Fe, visited Cadillac Ranch west of Amarillo first made a stop at the excellent visitor center in NM along I40 first, pickup brochures and hoteldiscounts and drove from Tucumcari along NM to Las Vegas, NM, a very nice town and then to the Santa Fe area. This is not the fastest route but it is a scenic drive. And if you have time, visit Las Vegas NM too. Also the mentioned Turquoise trail is scenic but you%26#39;ll miss Las Vegas.

Has anyone camped in state parks near santa fe? I see two: Pecos and Fenton Lake. I%26#39;ll start a forum on that, but just thought i%26#39;d ask you all first. I know you are well-travelled.

I%26#39;m guessing you%26#39;re coming up I-45 from Houston to Dallas. You can take I-20 west to either 408 (Mountain Creek Parkway, I think is the name of the exit--this becomes Loop 12) or farther west to 360, both of which will take you up to 114, and bypass Dallas traffic. Those are much less trafficked streets, particularly during rush hours. Still busy, but normally not at a standstill.

I wouldn%26#39;t go any farther than 360 to cut to the north because past that point you start adding significant mileage to the drive.

Also, if you%26#39;re having your evening meal in Wichita Falls, they have a whole street of the usual chains: Olive Garden, Friday%26#39;s, etc. It%26#39;s a college town. I don%26#39;t know of any outstanding local restaurant, but maybe if you ask in the Wichita Forum you%26#39;ll get a recommendation from someone who knows the area. The last time I was there we ate at a Logan%26#39;s which is a reasonably priced, pretty decent chain steakhouse, and it didn%26#39;t have the extreme wait that some of the others did.
