We will be in San Antonio one day and night in April. With two kids, 7 and 9, what are the must dos and best restaurants?

If Riverwalk/downtown, go to the Alamo, possibly the IMAX theater if your kids are into that, and Schillo%26#39;s for lunch. My 11 and 10 year olds love those places. Riverboat rides are fun too.

Visit to Texas

I plan to visit Texas in April for an Elderhostel in San Antonio. I will be driving south from Dallas/Ft. Worth area. I am enterested in visiting Austin and Fredricksburg on the way there. Would also be interested in any suggestion of other visits on the way there.

Austin is a fun city to visit as is Fredricksburg. I am not sure if you would be interested but in San Marcos there is a huge outlet shopping center with lots of great buys also there is Aquarena Center that is very interesting if it is open that time of year. New Braunfels is a quaint German area between San Marcos and San Antonio.

There is a Best Western and Comfort Suites in La Porte. Might want to check out there websites for shuttle/location information.

The good news is that La Porte is closer to Hobby than Galveston.

Rockport house

Sorry..originally added this to a different post, here it is again.

My parents were visiting us from CA a few weeks ago. They headed down to Rockport for a couple of nights, and on a whim, bought a beach house. They are thinking they will retire there in the next couple of years. In the mean time...how easy will it be to rent out? What about using it as a vacation home with young kids? Is there enough to do for young families? Apparently it is on a canal, has a boat dock, etc.

The public part of the beach is so nice. It is clean, and shallow, so the kids can wade out quite a way.

La Copa

Have been reading through the pages and looks like the La Copa has some bad bad reviews. That is where we are booked for the end of December. Please.. any info on the place?

We stayed at LaCopa last summer (by accident) we had (The Island Inn) reserved it was (awful to say the least) So we went to LaCopa %26amp; let me tell you they really took very good care of. Granted we didn%26#39;t have a view of the beach from the room.. It was clean very friendly people. Free breakfast was great.. Little Happy hour in the evening no complaints.

La Copa

We stayed at La Copa August 2005. They treated us really well. The rooms where nice and clean however their parking is limited.

I want everyone who is considering staying at La Copa Inn to know what they did to us and another couple. On the back page OF THEIR BROCHURE WHICH WAS PICKED UP IN THEIR LOBBY, was listed their Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year%26#39;s packages. Their New Year%26#39;s Special exactly as printed on the brochure:

$199.00 (offer valid December 31, 2006 %26amp; January 1, 2007. Stay with us for New Year%26#39;s Eve on the Island! Package includes:

2 nights accommodations (double occupancy), bottle of champagne, %26amp; dinner for 2 at your choice of Sea Ranch or Pirate%26#39;s Landing. Offer includes daily Happy Hour as well as a daily continental breakfast with freshly-made Belgian waffles. Call for details and to make your reservation.

We called to make the reservation in mid December and the clerk said there was no New Year%26#39;s package??? We told him it was right on the back of their brochure from their lobby. He asked that we hold and he would check on it. What??? He said the manager was out and he would have him call us when he returned which would be shortly. He did call roughly a half hour later. He asked us to fax him the brochure to which we repeated that it came from his lobby. He finally relented and made the reservations for us and said we should bring the brochure when we checked in and they would honor it. Well guess what, New Year%26#39;s Eve, we go to check in and they would not honor it. We asked for the manager, who came to the front desk and proceeded to tell us that the New Year%26#39;s Special was sold out when we called to make the reservation. Really?? Then why did he call us back and make the reservation and tell us he would honor it? And furthermore, he said the price would be $119.99 per night and would not include anything period. He was a total jerk, very obnoxious and unprofessional, etc. He asked if we wanted to cancel and we of course said no, not yet, to which he said you have to tell me right now. To which we said no we don%26#39;t and left to seek accommodations elsewhere. We did call and cancel. We were told they would be charging a one night%26#39;s fee. We responded they would be hearing from American Express. As a followup when we check into our new hotel, I called the Sea Ranch which is a very well known restaurant , to see if they had a free dinner with La Copa%26#39;s New Year%26#39;s Special. I was told they sometimes do $20 off coupons and things like that with La Copa, but wasn%26#39;t aware of anything for New Year%26#39;s eve as they have a 2 hour wait all night long. At this point, I feel they just never had a New Year%26#39;s Special at all. Oh Boy, hey get this! I can%26#39;t believe this. A friend just stopped by to see how our New Year%26#39;s went and I just said well I won%26#39;t be sending anyone to LaCopa. She then told me her story. She had gone there in October to look at the rooms and to make reservations for her children and grandchildren. She said the room was big and very nice. She had asked for adjoining rooms to have 2 rooms and was told no problem. They arrived right before Christmas and were booked for 10 days. No adjoining rooms, very small room. Her daughter said she couldn%26#39;t take her shoes off because her feet were sticking to the floor it was so bad. When they complained to the front desk, they said they couldn%26#39;t do anything about it, that was all they had. My friend went there the next morning and as soon as she saw it she immediately moved her kids to a condo at the Royal. She said all the people at the front desk were just awful. God, what a terrible place. I guess the bottom line here folks is you%26#39;ve been warned. I am extremely angry at what they did to us, our friends were very embarassed since it was their hotel of choice and I intend to send a letter to the owners of LaCopa and the Chamber of Commerce. I just wonder how many people may have fallen prey to La Copa%26#39;s New%26#39;s Year%26#39;s Special!!!!!!! If you%26#39;ve stayed at LaCopa and had a good experience, good for you, consider yourself lucky! When we got home, I checked our American Express charges and found they had charged the one night fee and same day immediately CREDITED IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great place. try the La Quinta at the other end of the island also. But the La Copa is clean and presents a good deal

Are there any good Dallas-Ft Worth travel agencies?

I want to arrange a trip to Europe for this summer. I would love to use a travel agency who knows the areas to which I want to travel, has recommendations, selection, and can put a package together for my wife and I.

However, these days, travel agencies in the States tend to be order takers, people with whom you need to know exactly what you want to do before you see them.

Are there any full service agencies in the area with whom you%26#39;ve had a great experience? I want to go in, give an idea of what I want to do and where, and have them help in putting a plan together and, of course, making the reservations, etc. Any recommendations would be much appreciated.

OK , now I am curious. When are you going, where do you plan to go, what do you like to see and do, and how long are you staying?

Actually I love to plan my own trips. We spent nearly three months in Japan %26amp; China in 2002 and I loved the adventure of studying the maps, the travel books, the internet and then making the trip plans. I made most of the reservations on the internet for that trip. We had a grand time.

I also planned a three week trip to the Carribean. We went to the tiny island of Vieques and traveled between islands on prop planes with only 4 to 6 seats. I loved it. I don%26#39;t believe a travel agent would normally book these types of ';adventures';. As you imply they sell prepackaged trips.

There is a travel club that meets the first Sunday of each month at about 5:30 at Half Price Books on Northwest Highway. The attendees can tell you quite a lot about everything regarding travel. Some of them use agents.

Are there any good Dallas-Ft Worth travel agencies?

TravelingCowgirl - I am definitely going to Venice (we have a group meeting there at the end of June). Originally I was only planning to go there, but I saw a mention of a trip from Paris to Venice (3-4 days in Paris, overnight train to Venice, 4-5 days in Venice). I am now thinking of that or perhaps 2-3 cities in Rome.

I am interested in a travel agency because, if it%26#39;s a decent one, they tend to provide package rates with discounts. Full price to Venice etc. is rather steep, so any advantages of group rates would be welcome. If the group you mention knows of any good agencies, I am interested, whether they are based in DFW or perhaps online.

Hi.. we are coming to SPI Dec 29th and staying thru Jan. 4th. We really hope there are fireworks NYEve. Could you tell us of some good, not to pricey restaurants. Also.. what dolphine watching cruise is best?? Sure hope the weather is good but then we are coming from cold Colorado so am sure it will be great!

We%26#39;re going there too. Visiting family in Corpus and then driving down. Yes, there are fireworks on the bayside (west side) of the island, between Red Snapper and Marlin Sts. Still looking for restaurant suggestions too.

Dirty Al%26#39;s should be a must on your list....the fried shrimp is fabulous. The same owners of Dirty Al%26#39;s have taken over what used to Gulf Coast Oyster Bar. It has a new name and I have heard it is very good. Maybe someone can shed some light on the name. My favorite place to eat is the Harbor View inside the B%26amp;A Seafood Market in Port Isabel. (located on the left, past Wal Mart, as you are driving to the island...set back from the road). At this time of year, I don%26#39;t think they are open for dinner, just lunch. No frills, just really fresh seafood (the caldo marisco and ceviche are wonderful). There is always Blackbeard%26#39;s, huge portions, pretty reliable, always open. I am setimental about Palmetto Inn (mexican %26amp; seafood); I love their queso. For breakfast, try Manuel%26#39;s on a side street in Port Isabel. Nothing is too pricey. Last time I was there, the most upscale place still remaining was De Luna%26#39;s...the upstairs dining room can be costly, but the more casual downstairs isn%26#39;t too bad. Oh, the restaurant at the Peninsula resort, I think it is called Las Olas, or something like that, is very nice and good (they work on presentation) if you want a little something fancier while you are there.

Appreciate the suggestions. My father-in-law is a big fried shrimp fan and they wanted to explore Port Isabel too. We at least plan on trying Dirty Al%26#39;s and Harbor View for lunch. Still haven%26#39;t settled on New Year%26#39;s Eve dinner plans yet.

We are in SPI now (Jan 1) and found the best breakfast at Yummi%26#39;s on the blvd, just north of the visitor%26#39;s center. This little plaza also has one of the best places for burgers--Jackie%26#39;s Place. It%26#39;s so new they have no sign! Look for the awning touting steaks and seafood. The shopping plaza is called Franke%26#39;s Plaza. The variety of burgers is amazing.

Weather%26#39;s been great so far!

We did breakfast at Yummi%26#39;s too. Good breakfast. Less than enthusiastic waiter but the food made up for it.

The next day we went to Rovans for breakfast. A little run down but good diner-style food.

Per an earlier recommendation we went to Harbor View restaurant in the B %26amp; A Seafood Market in Port Isabel: Outstanding! Best fried gulf shrimp to date. Blackened scallops and shrimp were good too.

New Year%26#39;s Eve dinner was at Dolphin Cove Oyster Bar: a little hard to find at night but great!: the Cove Platter was a great deal if you want a fried seafood combo.

Biggest surprise was Kohnami%26#39;s: they offered Japanese and Korean food. good bibimbop and tempura and desserts

Alas we didn%26#39;t make it to Dirty Al%26#39;s (also hard to find with the expansion in front): but by then max%26#39;ed out on seafood.
