Moving to La Porte from Australia

We are considering relocating from Australia to Texas, have been offered a job in La Porte. Can anyone provide some advice on nice areas to live in with good elementary schools.

Moving to La Porte from Australia

The majority of the chemical plant employees in that area live in Deer Park, which has the better schools and is a nicer area. But it%26#39;s still not that great.

Look south: Seabrook, Kemah, Shoreacres, even Clear Lake City. It%26#39;s much nicer in those areas and I believe that all are in Clear Creek ISD, which has an excellent reputation.

As someone who actually lives there, I beg to differ.

PinkMillie, Deer Park%26#39;s schools are very highly rated, and it%26#39;s one of the best school districts in the Houston Metro area. As for La Porte, I used to live there, and while the schools are fairly good, they are not as highly rated as Deer Park%26#39;s (which is the next town over). La Porte and Deer Park are close to the chemical plants, yes, but it%26#39;s not a problem for us and never has been. La Porte is fairly close to Galveston Bay and is a rather small community with new neighborhoods going up and improvements being made all the time.

As the previous poster stated, the areas south of Houston - Clear Lake, Seabrook, Kemah - are very nice, but they%26#39;re also more expensive, and the schools aren%26#39;t top notch in some of those areas. It depends on where you go. I would recommend Clear Lake, of the three.

You also may want to look at Friendswood and Pearland. Both nice communities, rather affordable, and have good schools for the kids.

This website might also help you out, www.har.com. Under ';Home Finder'; you will find information on neighborhoods as well as schools.

Kind of interesting that an Arizona resident is so opinionated of the areas - unless you live in an area it is hard to rate it acurately.

Those areas are in petrochemical areas however if you move into areas that are away from Highway 225, you miss the bulk of them and are closer to Houston %26amp; Clear Lake.

LaPorte has some nice areas along Fairmont Parkway. Deer Park as well. You definitely want Deer Park Schools if possible. Out of those area. Baywood Oaks %26amp; Baywood Shadows are Deer Park Schools and bording on the edges of Clear Lake with great access to La Porte, major highways, etc..

La Porte appears to be clean and has a very small town feel to it, which is nice.

The areas of Seabrook %26amp; League City that are near La Porte are quite a bit more due to the homes being near the waterfront. Depends on what price range home you are looking for.

No offense meant by the comment about Arizona being opinionated about the areas, so please don%26#39;t misinterpret.

Just meant unless you%26#39;ve actually lived somewhere it is hard to accurately comment on an area other than using info you have heard. Plus seems like everyone pushes for their part of town as the best - guess because people generally love where they live and their hometowns.

Actually, I lived in Houston for over 8 years before moving out here and still have family there. And, part of that time I lived on Fuqua close to Pasadena and spent much of my time driving around the Bay Area and around the chemical plants.

But I don%26#39;t know why it%26#39;s so strange that someone would comment on an area that they%26#39;d lived in in the past but don%26#39;t happen to currently live in. I%26#39;d have a hard time believing it%26#39;s changed that much there, especially on the east side.

I know - I guess I find it interesting how when people ask for help in deciding where to move everyone recommends their area above all others but that makes sense as that is the area they are most familiar with but also evidence that the entire Houston area has a lot of decent areas to live in or else others would push for their areas so hard. Sometimes the forum almost sounds like a contest to see who can push the hardest for their neighborhood and that probably says a lot of good for the entire area in general.

Thanks so much everyone for your advice and comments, we are coming for a visit next week so will check out these areas. It is very difficult finding information when you are half a world away! By the way, how is the weather at the moment?

Currently the temperatures are lows in the 60%26#39;s, highs around 80 degrees. You can go to weather.com for the weather updates, to help you pack appropriate clothing.

Welcome to the Houston area!!
