specialty/ unique shops

Going to Austin next week and interested in shopping in one-of-a-kind stores and shops; I don%26#39;t want to go to national chains or huge shopping malls. Looking for clothing, music, book, food, random knick-knack stores.

Also interested in seeing live music in the alt-country or honky tonk genre-- any suggestions where to go?

thanks.....

Look here. It%26#39;s the Austin independent business alliance website.

Howdy! Might want to go to Allen%26#39;s Boots on South Congress. Might be more of a Texas store than an Austin store, but good place to get boots as well as jeans, blouses, and western apparel.

For books don%26#39;t miss The Book People. It%26#39;s huge! It%26#39;s right across the street from Whole Foods (Sixth Street and N. Lamar). And don%26#39;t miss Whole Foods. It is not your ordinary grocery store. It%26#39;s Whole Foods%26#39; headquarters and the store is amazing.

Lots of cute shops near this area too. Try Ecclectic just a few blocks north on Lamar (from Sixth). Great gifts and the coolest hand-painted furniture. Wildflowers has great linens. Can%26#39;t remember specific names but there%26#39;s lots of shops between those two stores on N. Lamar.

From Whole Foods, if you up Sixth Street, you%26#39;ll find some art galleries, a cool furniture store, antiques and other shops.

My favorite furniture store is My Living Room which is on the south side of the Congress Bridge (right after you cross the bridge from downtown).

If you want Mexican art and gifts, there%26#39;s a great place right next to Las Manitas (great Mexican food for breakfast or lunch). Don%26#39;t remember the name but the restaurant is around Second and Congress. Everyone knows it, just ask!

Have a great time!!

The Mexican specialty and gifts shop next to Las Manitas is Tesoros, at 209 Congress.
