One evening in Houston

We are arriving in Houston (IAH) Saturday mid afternoon and fly out 9 am next morning. Any recommendations re a cheap but safe place to stay and what to see in that short time? Never been there before.

Many thanks.

Assuming you want to stay by the airport that night, look at the following hotels: Comfort Suites on JFK Blvd., Hilton Garden Hotel on JFK, La Quinta on JFK (lq.com).

Things to do: you could try the museum district if you like museums. The Woodlands area, about 15 miles north of the airport, offers shopping, dining, movies, etc.

www.houston-guide.com might help you get a feel to the layout of the city also, as it is really spread out.

Along JFK is a good suggestion, but there%26#39;s almost nothing in the way of shopping or food there. There are a few hotels (Comfort Inn and Hampton Inn + more) in Humble near FM 1960 and US 59, which itself is in the Deerbrook Mall area and still pretty close to the airport. Kingwood is an even nicer area and just a little further out on US 59.

Yeah, go Downtown. Either hit a museum or just hang out Downtown, then drive down Westheimer to the Galleria. You don%26#39;t even have to like shopping that much: it%26#39;s just quite a sight.

There%26#39;s also the Rice University campus, the Rice Village, the Medical Center, Hermann Park, 20th Street antique stores, etc. It all depends on what you%26#39;re into.

unless you are really in to shopping, I would skip the Galleria and other malls - those you can find in any big city. I do not know what you are interested in, but the Museum District would be a good option.

You could also drive down to Clear Lake area and go to the Johnson Space Center and then spend some time walking around the Kemah boardwalk, where there are plenty of shops and places to eat. It is at least an hour drive from IAH - but everything is far from IAH in Houston.
