Walking in Downtown Houston

We have to go to Houston to go to a conference, but the conference hotel is booked (the conference is at the convention center). Any Houston experts want to voice an opinion on whether we would be ok trying to Priceline a hotel in downtown houston and trying to walk? Or should we try to book a hotel somewhat close to the convention center?

Go to biddingfortravel.com and they will tell you what hotels are in each class for downtown. Knowing which ones you might get depending on the quality level you are willing to bid might help me give a better answer. All of the downtown hotels are ';walkable';, but some are really pushing the outer limits. Of course, what is walkable in fall like weather is further away than if it gets really humid. The closest hotel to the Convention Center is the Hilton, but I am assuming that is the convention hotel. The second closest would be the 4 Seasons. The Magnolia would be about 5-8 blocks (can%26#39;t remember exact number of blocks) and The Alden a little bit further away . The Hyatt, Lancaster, Doubletree and Crowne Plaza would all be about a 20 minute walk, which is too far for some people. The Lancaster is closer to the theater and some evening entertainment if that is important. Some areas of downtown, those closest to the Convention Center, can have some undesirable people hanging out at night.

You are fine walking around downtown during the day but I wouldn%26#39;t want to be walking to a hotel from the convention center during the evening hours - it is rather desolate. Many hotels in downtown will provide a shuttle service to the convention center -- not sure which ones but you might try calling and asking if they do. Try Courtyard Marriot, Residence Inn, The Magnolia or the Lancaster.
