Relocating to Houston from Toronto

Hi there my husband and I will be moving to Houston January 1st. He will be working right downtown and does not want a lengthy commute. We definitely prefer the urban to the suburban. I am home with a toddler in the day time and like to have activities and shopping close by. We also enjoy dining out and evening entertainment ie. music etc. We will be needing a 3 bedroom and I HAVE to have a dishwasher AC and a washer and dryer in my unit. We are looking to cap our budget at about 1500/mo could anyone give me an idea of a neighborhood that would be right for us?

First off check out har.com. If your husband is working downtown look in the hieghts/galleria or memorial areas. Houston is full of good restuarants any of these areas will be close to a variety of places.

ALL houses/apartments will have AC.

Although I agree that the Heights/Memorial/Galleria would all be great, you will have a hard time finding a house for $1500 a month. I am unsure if you are renting or buying. You might be able to rent an apartment in town for that amount. A good alternative to the Heights is Oak Forest. It is an ';old school'; neighborhood and it is going through a major gentrification. The houses are a bit older, but some have a lot of character. It is probably the most ';urban'; neighborhood that is relatively safe and affordable. If you are a bit more adventurous Idlewood, Eastside and Lindale are the neighborhoods for the new ';urban adventurer.'; They are getting better by the year, but still a little on the edge.

You might try apartments in Midtown. Because you have a toddler, you don%26#39;t need to worry about school districts just yet. Living in Midtown would give you time to enjoy the city and living very close to downtown while you learn the city. By the time your toddler is school-aged you%26#39;ll know the city better and have a better idea of where you%26#39;d like to move more permanently. West Gray area might be close as well.
