Need some info. about Galveston at Texas A &M

My son is a marine biology major and will begin attending the university in December. I will be following him down and getting him set up in his dorm room. I will be needing accomodations at the end of December for two adults and one child. Will I be able to stay close to the university? I know that the marine biology department is located on an island. Is there hotel or condo rental on this island. Also, I have read several postings about ';not walking the beaches at night'; and ';be careful, don%26#39;t stray'; from the strand. As a concerned mother and an overprotective one, where is the safest place for my family to stay and what advice can I give to my 18 year old naive son about the area?

UTMB is on Galveston Island. There are lots of accomodations for you to choose from, and it seems the school is pretty central. Galveston.com lists most of these accomodations with general information. You may want to contact the school or hotels to see if they have special rates for UTMB visitors, it never hurts to ask.

If you will be coming down in the beginning of December, you may have difficulty finding rooms near the Strand area, as this is when the annual ';Dickens On The Strand'; is held.

I would not be worried about walking the beaches at night and stuff, just use common sense, like you would anywhere at night.

I would be worried about walking the beaches at night - don%26#39;t do it. That is just common sense and regardless of what some people may say - the beaches aren%26#39;t safe to walk on at night. It is safe to walk along the seawall in the ';tourist areas'; but that is about it. I%26#39;ve lived here my entire life and spent a great deal of time in Galveston as a young person (and that was a long time ago) and it wasn%26#39;t great then. Galveston has its rough areas. Nightlife for young people who live on the island is pretty much limited to the Strand and Postoffice streets and he should be fine in those areas. Your son can use his common sense and he%26#39;ll see what areas are good and bad. A female relative went to UTMB in Galveston about 6 years ago and lived at some apartments called Campeche Bay which is going out toward the West end of Galveston Island and never had any problems there. Also for rentals, there are people who rent out the Bay homes in Bayou Vista and Omega Bay to students (and their families). While that isn%26#39;t right by the school it is a good area to live in so you might check with some realtors about that.

Galveston is two different cities during the day and at night. As long as your son stays in the areas that the students stay in and doesn%26#39;t stray off the beaten path at night - he should be just fine. There are great entertainment venues along Strand and Postoffice. My spouse works in Galveston fifty percent of the week and recommends not walking around anywhere in Galveston alone at night -- go with a group. Daytime is fine.

A big thanks to you all! I appreciate the good advice and the recommendations.

Texas A%26amp;M- Galveston (Not UTMB) is across a small bridge on Pelican Island. There is a small park at the end of this island (Seawolf Park). At this time, there are no hotels, etc on Pelican Island, but the whole of Galveston Island is available. I would suggest any of the LaQuinta%26#39;s on the island, but the one with the 8700 Seawall address would be more convenient to the A%26amp;M campus. I have known may students who have attended this university, and most have never had a problem. Just tell him to exercise the same caution he would anywhere else, and try to stay in a group.

Sorry for the bad info. I read Texas A%26amp;M, and my mind went to UTMB.

Thanks Texas Teacher for setting this straight for bulldogmomma!

I bought a property on the west end of the Seawall blvd. two week ago and love it. I am a woman of 45 and have gone jogging and walked at night on the seawall. There are peole driving around on the blvd. walking, jogging .....

You need to know your surronding like anywhere else. COMMON SENSE is key.
